284 key broke off- Need to "Hotwire"!

Hi Guys-
I Need to Learn How to "Hotwire" this little 284 (2005 model).

Broke the darn 284's key off (can't get it out), and- need to get this beast back to the Barn (2 miles), can't leave it here-not such a good spot.

Need to perform this hotwire on the little critter-this one time only, so I can get it to the Barn- and- get the Ignition Switch w/keys ordered.

Well it is a diesel so it dosn't need any ignition circuit to run. On the starter is a smaller round cylinder called the solenoid. It is a remote switch device to control current to starter motor and in some cases engage the starter with the flywheel ring gear. It has 2 large terminals for carrying current from battery to starter motor. There will be another smaller terminal that is the current in from the key switch to activate the solenoid. IF you momentarilly connect between the larger terminal that is connected back to the battery + terminal and the small terminal, the solenoid will engage the starter and the engine will crank. A small piece of wire or a screwdriver blade can usually do this. There are no safety devices involved and you are standing down between the wheels so if it is in gear it can start and run you over(this can and does happen) so be carefull and make triple sure that the beast is in neutral before trying to start this way.

Before you do that though, since the tip of the key is in the tractor ignition switch, I would first try putting a large flat blade screwdriver into the key slot and try turning the ignition key that way. Since the key is in there, the tumblers may be set and the drum may turn easilly with the screwdriver.

That's a good suggestion Ron, to try turning the ignition with a screw driver first. I didn't think of that. I had a problem shortly after I got my Kama and had to jump start it the way you described.



I used a short extension cord and alligator clips connected to the terminals with the cord running up through the dash. Then I would hold the alligator clips on that end together to start it. That put me in the seat. Heck, it was 2 months before I found that crummy loose ground that kept the entire dash instruments from working. lol...It turned out to be a loose ground wire at the headlights!

Heck.. since the lock may be trashed if he can't extract the key slug.. then he might get the cyl to turn with the screwdriver even if the tumblers ain't lined up.

I've done this on old tractors and heavy equipment in an emergency.. Just means you have to repalce the key switch.. no biggie..

The board did a funny hickkup.. I hit post quick reply, and walked away fromt he keyboard... minutes later it had not posted and message edit window was still up.. i hit it again.. and it paused.. then posted both of em.. go figure..

If I'da thought about it I'd have deleted one.. though didn't cross my mind till now...
