2nd Amendment

Sounds vaguely familiar, Steve. My wife stayed home with our two daughters until they were in junior high, then she started working at a private school 4 hours a day until they got out of school, then full time until I retired.

Lack of a mother at home is the only thing that I see that has changed since the fifty's when I grew up. Of course we have had a president who sure didn't lead by example, but hopefully that is behind us. I think it makes a big difference if a wife stays home to raise her children. Someone needs to know what youngsters are doing at all times and express interest in their upbringing. We are just fooling ourselves if we think that a day care center or teachers will do this for us. I'm sure I would not have turned out very well if my life had been self-governed at 9 or 10 years of age. Gheesh what can we expect?

I relate to the post of the other day on excuses. We continue to blame others for all our problems or make more meaningless laws instead of facing the problem and making a conscious decision to "do it ourselves". Don't know what the answer is but a good start is a personal sacrifice to stay home and raise our children.

Dr. Dan,

The second amendment is sacrosanct, of course. No touchee. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

However, I don't agree 100% with your comments on working mothers. I'm sure that there are a lot of stay-at-home mothers that completely ignore their children, and there are a lot of working parents that pick their children up from day care at 5:30 and spend the rest of the evening one-on-one with them.

My child entered day-care at age 2 and I don't think that it's possible for her to have turned out any better. In summary . . . Quality time makes the difference, whether it's an hour or 10 hours a day./w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

My daughter might still be living in a trailer home on a 70x30 lot instead of in a nice new home on 10 acres if my wife hadn't gone back to school and gotten a good job. Many families just can't make an acceptable living on one salary. I hesitate to judge them because I've been there. Through the grace of God, luck, skill, perseverance, whatever, my family now earns a bit more than the national median income, but it takes two of us to do it. I suspect that the vast majority of contributors to this board also make decent money. Let's be thankful for what we have.

Fishman,
You are right on. It's not the quantity but the quality. It is especially good for daughters to see their mothers in rewarding careers as it improves their self-esteem and how far they go in life. Don't get me wrong a stay at home mom is a great thing but there are other alternative solutions that are just as beneficial. My wife works also and my office is right by the school. Afterschool my daughter comes to the office and has her own room in the back that we made for her. She does homework, colors, crafts, etc. until I am done. We stagger days and hours to work so we are with the girls as much as possible. As long as they are picked up or adequate supervision is given afterschool they will be alright. That is when kids get in the most trouble is when they are left unsupervised. It can get out of hand but if it's done right both parents can certainly work and still raise good kids.

I'm a stay at home dad with 2 little boys. Warren's 4 and Samuel is 1 month. Time is precious and children are gifts from God. They both should be treated as such.
Have a great day because I am!!!!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
