This summer I was thinking of using a roller pump to take water out my pond and use it on the garden. From the pumps I ve looked at a roller pump driven off the pto is probably the cheapest way to go for the occasional use. My problem is that the roller out lets are 3/4" and the hose for that is more expensive than the usual garden hose 5/8".Moreover, I have lots of old garden hose but no 3/4" Will I be getting into problems of backup if I "step down" in size?

If I were to do this I would come out of the pump with a 3/4" IPS boiler drain then you hose would thread on to that. Pressure won't be a problem as long as your hose is open, just watch the pressure. Start by ideling the tractor with the pump in gear then increase the tractor speed.

Good luck

I am probably wrong but aren't roller pumps low volume? I am referring to 'roller pump" as one with a rotor squeezing a tube. Those are the only ones I have had contact with - used in fertilizer applicators.

Low volume? Most of the ones I see at TSC.. are low pressure high volume.. for instance.. 300 psi / 21gpm / 1200 rpm.. etc.. like this 6 roller version.

High pressure / low volume are what i think of for hyd pumps.. like 1700-2500 psi, and 4-9 gpm for tractor hyds.. etc..

yes soundguy thats what i was thinking. Perhaps the pressure problem could be solved by using a 5/8 hose to the inlet with an adapter?

Don't choke off your suction side. Just go with the 5/8" hose. Low pressure, low volume, you won't hurt anything. The only thing that will happen is you will have a little more velocity in the discharge. Which means, you can hit the kids 20' away instead of 15'.

You might want to consider just using one of those cheap little two cycle water pumps that comes with a 1" suction hose and garden hose output. Save the tractor time. And some roller pumps require oiling after use to prevent rusting.
Just a thought.
