Hi all,

We have 20 acres that became (and still is, but they get mowed now) mostly blackberries and scotchbroom after it was logged before we bought it. Now, Tansy Ragwort is making a big show and I want to encourage nice grass to grow for future live stock. Only about 8 acres is field, but the invasive plants are not screwing around and have serious wills to live. I want them to die. So I think I will have to spray, what kind of sprayer would you recommend? Something medium duty I imagine, maybe to use a weed and feed mix?

Thanks!

I found that crossbow works best for me; although not on the scope and scale you are discussing. It is a life-time membership when you sign-onto the goal of controlling invasive weeds. The "huggers" want people to use their special lady-bugs but I like spray.

Some guys are set up for spraying sod fields; take a look at their rigs or pay them to do the first job.

I am not a " hugger " per say but, if you are on well water I would be very careful with Crossbow it has 2-4-D in it and can cause problems down the road, especially with young children. I am a victim of Agent Orange ( 2-4-D ), Vietnam and have watched many men in my old unit succumb to the effects of this defoliant. It an't pretty. The power company in our area uses 2-4-D on the power lines here, but I have opted out. I have 4 wells and a large pond and instead keep all power lines mowed. Would consistent and regular mowing before flowering eliminate Tanzy Ragwort? We do not have that particular invasive species ( yet ) in this area, but I have beat back others with mowing. There is a real and legitimate concern about the over use of pesticides in our farming practices and the consequences. Asian Lady Bugs are an invasive species in these parts, so using one invasive species to control another certainly isn't the answer, but nether is over use of pesticides. As far as sprayers I can't help you out. Good luck on finding a remedy, and my intention is not to offend so I hope there is no offense taken. My distaste for 2-4-D is justified.
