Hello fellow TBNers
I am doing some research to understand what the popular winches are and how much they sell for (and did they come with cable, etc). Can anybody help me?
Thanks

Sure. I think the most popular, in order are:

1) Farmi

2) Norse

3) Farnsgard (sp?)

When I was looking a few years ago they all came with cable and sliders, but not choker chains. Prices start in the low $2000 range and go up depending on size.

I have a Farmi JL 351 P. I used to have a Farmi JL 290 and traded it for the 351. The Farmi is a great winch. The clutches are easy to replace and are warranted for 5 years. I t comes with 165 feet of cable and hooks to pull 3 logs at once. The P model has a plow so that you can move snow and fill in ruts. It pulls at 11,000 lbs which is doubled to 22,000 lbs you use the snatch block. There isn't much it won't move. The only thing I'll say is that you need to pull almost straight off the back of the tractor. A few degrees and the tractor will come off the ground try to flip in a split second. I use mine on a Ford 2120. I think it was around $3200. http://www.valby.biz/newpage6.htm

I've got the Farmi 351P as well. Price was about $2400 two to three years ago.

Saw one this weekend at the local MB dealer. I assume the name started with a G. There was a Big G, then a model # like g36, g24, or something like that. Seemed to carry the weight a little lower. Delear got my mad so I left without asking any questions about it.

Hitching the snatch block to the tree your pulling, is going to exceed the strength of your cable, unless it is half inch. I know, because I just broke the (10mm cable) on my Norse winch with 10,200 lbs. of pull.

We were at the Paul Bunyon show in Nelsonville OH with a guy that had Tajfun winches. Probably the best built winch I saw there. The smallest was around $1900 and was rated at around 6600lbs of pull and somewhere around 8400lbs brake power. That was the smallest they had some much larger ones also.
Scandinavian Forestry Tech was the name of the company. They are from Idaho. His name was Anders and he was very knowledgable and was a very nice guy.

I've been looking at these logging winches on the Internet (never seen one for real). What anchors the tractor/winch in place? It seems that it would take a pretty hefty tractor to to anchor against 8,000+ winch force. The winches aren't very heavy - 430 lb shipping on the Farmi JL351P.
Also, it would seem that the high pulling point would put a lot of stress on the 3-point top link, or worse, on the transmission casting.
Thanks

Bob,

The Farmi winch and the cable are rated to withstand the 11,000 pull. I think the cable has something like a 18,000 pound burst. when you use a snatch block, you double the pull on the load, but the pull on each half of the cable is is only half of the pull on the load. I've pulled many times where I've exceeded the ability of the winch's capacity and the clutch slips. The cable is fine.
