So I finally got all of the 3 point brackets to finish putting together my 850. I played with a blade over the weekend and it didn't seem to want to float at all. If a front tire went over a gopher mount it would cause the blade to dig in. I thought that putting the lever all the way forward was supposed to let the rear implements float? Any ideas?

If you lift on the arms, do they come up?
If you have a bucket, try lifting the nose off of the ground with the blade attached.

From your description, it is very hard to figure out what you are expecting the "float" to do. If the front raises and the blade digs in, then it has to do with the weight of the blade and not whether in "float" (control lever all the way down). So am thinking you need to figure out more about what the 3 ph does, and how it is supposed to work so you can give us an idea what "float" means to you. ;)

We want to help.

I don't have a 850 but yes your 3pt should float up and down but some do not flex side to side.

The up and down is what I'm trying to figure out.

I'll try pulling up on the arms. No bucket (yet) to test with.

Float basically means that it us just the weight of the implement itself on the ground, and the implement can move up over something if it needs to. In other words, it isn't locked into a position.

In my example, say I push my 3-point control all the way forward so the full weight of the implement is on the ground. I can pull across hard packed dirt and it will scrape almost nothing. Now if the front goes over a gopher mound and lifts the front of the tractor, it is like it is putting additional force on the blade because it causes it to dig into the ground. If it was "floating" then I would not expect anything more than the weight of the implement to do the work no matter what.

One of my neighbors suggested today that I try making my top link shorter, which will change the angle of the blade on the ground and may make it dig in less.

Thanks, now I have a better idea what you were expecting.
Put a short chain in place of the top link, and the front end then can raise without putting additional force on the rear blade.
It does take considerable force for the 3 ph attachment to cause the 3 ph arms to raise just from the way they work.
A longer chain will also allow the front wheels to drop in a depression without raising the rear blade.

Do you have several holes on the tractor to mount the top link to? If so try the lowest one.

If you look at the lower holes to the 3 point lift arms there are two settings. There is a slot which allows the "float" to work. You turn the T type pins and plates verticle to float and horizontal to lock the lift arms. If you look at it it all makes sense.

I need to add a correction, The slots are only on the newer 850's about 1984 and up. I think the serial number break is 16000.

That is ONLY for floating from side to side (ie: letting the left side ride over a bump while the right side stays down). Most of the floating is done by the short arms on the rockshaft which lifr the arms in your picture.

Thanks! I'll give that a try.

I do - there are 5 different pin locations. I've got it in the highest...neighbor told me that I "always" wanted the upper and lower links to be parallel. I'll move it down and play with it.

Thanks guys!!
