Previously I posted a request to help me decide between a drag type and 3 point disc. I got lots of good advice. It has become evident to me that each has its place and if possible, its best to have both. I am mostly using it for food plots. Anyway It will be pulled by a Ford 7710 (87 hp) and / or a New Holland TB110 (90 hp) both FWA. What size 3 point would you consider to be the perfect match for these tractors? By match I mean maximum cutting without straining the tractors either pulling or lifting the disc. I would also want it to be wide enough to cover the wheel tracks. I have just about settled on a Hay King.

1) what width
2) what weight

thanks

I would recommend a pull type with hydraulic lift cylinder. I can pull a 21' IH 496 with my Case-IH 125 hp tractor but it is all it can handle. You should be able to pull a 14'-15' disc without any significant problems. Food plots mean unworked ground and the heavier the better. On tough ground, I will leave the wings of my disc up. More weight on the blades and it will go in the ground much better. I would estimate it is probably 12' wide with wings up and will still cover my duals. You should be able to handle a 12' disc with the wings up but probably can't go at full depth, but then you won't need to. You can buy used pull type discs, that are well built and can do the job. Many farmers no longer use the disc much and they can be bought in good condition for 1.5-2K.
Forget a 3 pt disc. The hayking heaviest model is 10'4" and weighs 1500 lbs. You will not have the weight to do any decent discing except on soft, tilled ground.

WE run that size JD tractors here on the farm and 12 ft works good for us in all conditions. It is also narrow enough to get through our 16 ft gates with a 14 ft drag behind the disc. Wheel type with hyd cyl is best. Ken Sweet

I'd go transport over 3pth any day. Easier to adjust depth and it rides through the field better. I run a 10ft IH 35 on our 65hp tractors. On those 90 hp stuff you could get away with a much larger folding transport harrow. Of course do you need it for the food plots is the question?

you def want a transport as it will give you the most weight to break ground. far easier to adjust depth and you would be able to turn while discing, while a 3pt you can't. i have run a 9ft athens w/ about the same size tractor as you have only it was a 2wd. if i'm not mistaken that athens was around 3k lbs, i think they build them heavy and they will last.

Amen to the worthlessness of a three point disc. Unless the ground is soft (and ours never seems to be when I want to disc), it just will not work. I get so tired of pulling it back and forth trying to get it to sink in. This year i even started plowing first, and it still doesn't work well. A good heavy transport disc may be great (never used one) but my food plots are scattered around my property and some are in tight places. Most are too small for a large disc. Turning a big disc around would cause me problems. I am going to go with using a bottom plow and then following up with a good heavy duty rotary tiller, which is much more manuerverable.

Well, the 3pt on the 7710 is rated at 4473 lb lift and 4200 lb for the TB110. So maybe 4000 lb is what you should be looking for.
I haven't found any 3pt discs larger than 7-8 ft wide and around 2000 lb.

I haven't seen a 3-pt disc that would "strain" either one of those tractors. :D

One thing to consider is, will you be hauling that tractor and disc? Over here, on the right side of the Sabine River, I can drive a tractor down the highway towing my 14' disc, but I can't haul it on a trailer without a permit. Also, what width are the gates that you'll have to go through?

Short answer: the heavy duty 10' will cove a little more ground. The heavy duty 8' will cover your tire tracks and would be legal to haul. Your tractors will handle either one.
