I would like to get a 3 PT mounted log splitter, but I don't have an extra valve to run it. Is it feasible (or even doable) to remove the hoses from the bucket curl long enough to connect the splitter hoses to run the splitter? Then reconnect the curl. That would be much less trouble than plumbing in another valve. I only split less than a cord per year so I wouldn't be using it very often. But that hammer and wedge keep getting heavier each year./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I am in the same boat. I think the dealer wanted $1400 for the remote valve. I can get a gas splitter for about $1000 but would rather just use the tractor if I can. Does anyone know how much a hydro pump for the PTO would be??

you could get a set of hoses with quick couplers on them and disconnect the curl circuit and run those hoses to the splitter. The only problem would be that you would need a bungee cord to hold the joystick in the curl or uncurl position.

You may want to use the lift circuit depending if you have a 3 position or 4 position valve on the curl / dump. It has to do with regeneration. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=buykubota&Number=101191&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1/> Click here for kubmech's excellant explanation </A>

You can buy PTO hydraulic pumps for under $200 and most of them will pump more gallons per minute and pressure than most CUT's. This will allow the splitter to work faster. It also makes the logsplitter a self contained unit, just using the tractor as the engine to run the splitter.

I haven't done a lot of checking but it seems the PTO powered hydraulic splitters cost about as much as those with a separate gas engine. I think if I were to go that route, I would buy one with the gas engine so that the tractor would be freed up to do other things at the same time.

freeing up the tractor to haul logs to - from the splitter is a good argument for having a gas one -- course using a pto driven splitter means one less engine to care for -- haven't fallen on one side of the fence for either case yet -- kinda watchin' what everybody here does and how they like their decision ----- so let us know --- I don't want to make the same mistake you do/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif --- $$$ is a factor in this too...and could be the factor that pushes me off the fence one way or the other

U will need an oil tank also.
Seems to me it should be about size of pump's GPM.
Like 5 GPM pump use 5 gal. tank.
Prince pumps had a 1000 rpm pto pump that could be slowed down to 540 rpm (about half the flow for tougher splitting).
My old L2900 had 540 & 1000 pto speeds by switching
plate on handle.
It would work like manual 2 stage pump.

If you attach a log splitter it will tie up your tractor.Even without a FEL you can drag the logs to the splitter before cutting.
