I am in the process of putting up a new chainlink fence. I also anticipate planting 50 + trees in the Spring. I am interested in purchasing a PHD for my 33 HP CUT.

I have looked at KK and Howse at a local store. Both come with 12 inch augers and are 489.00. However, neither appear to be overly sturdy.

Anyone have any opinions on either brand, or perhaps some other brand comparison? Again, I plan to use the PHD for fence posts, as well as, planting trees. Our soil here is sandy/rocky.

Thanks,

Tarious

tarious,
In general, I've been impressed with the value and sturdiness of KK products. I know nothing specifically about their PHD. When it came time for me to get a PHD I went with Danuser. Tractor Supply didn't have an outlet nearby, at the time, so KK was not available for comparison. The Danuser is considered one of the better PHD brands, but costs twice as much as the KK. A really tough looking PHD is made by BushHog. It porbably costs closer to the Danuser than the KK. The Danuser is a better quality unit than I need, but I don't regret getting it. On the other hand, unless you dig post holes all the time, the KK will likely be as much machine as you'll ever need.

We needed a fence erected around our pool. The fencing company quoted $1000 just for installation. I used that money to buy the PHD and put the fence in myself. It was a good learning experience, and the PHD is always here for other projects. Not used often, but there's no substitute. Mine came with a 9" auger. I found that to be plenty big for post holes...could probably even use smaller for cyclone fence posts.

The Leinbach PHD is a very sturdy unit and very cost efficent. You may want to look into one of those. E-mail me for a picture of the unit that would work on your tractor. Also they make a compact version that is a lot easier to hook up and it allows you not drag the auger on the ground.

I have one, so far it works great but I have pretty loose/sandy soil. What I also like about the design is that it serves a dual purpose. You remove one pin at the gearbox and you have a utility boom. I keep mine disassembled like this as it is easier to assemble by myself. Put the yoke and boom on the tractor and then back up to the rack in my barn where the gearbox/auger is kept and attach the gearbox to the boom.

I have the tractor supply / Speeco brand PHD with 9" auger. For what I use it for, (fencing in sandy / clay soil) it works great. I'm not sure how much luck you will have in rocky soil. In terms of durability, the sheild over where the PTO shaft conects to the gear box gets bent up, the PTO shaft shield is crap, but it digs holes just fine. Just keep people, kids, small pets, etc away when digging and the cheapness shouldn't affect you. I had to replace the auger cutting blades ($25) after about 200 holes, no biggie. Overall, a very worthwhile investment which has paid for itself about 5 x over on installation costs for my fencing.
