I like to split and fill my 5x6 wood trailer at the same time as oppsed to splitting and loading it up later. My wood lot is about 1 mile from where I store the wood, so it's a pain the way I do it now. My method is to put the wallenstein 3pt splitter into the trailer and tow it to the bush, drop the trailer, mount the splitter, fill the trailer and throw the splitter on top of the load or come back later for it.

I was thinking about extending the tongue of the trailer to clear the splitter when it's mounted, or to ad a hitch to the rear of the splitter? Anyone done this?

I can't say that I've done that, but, I've seen tandem(two) trailers behind 4 wheelers a lot.

If it were me, I would put the splitter as last in line( I think). Splitters tend to be wobbly, with no suspension, and have a mind of their own.

Is the splitter on a trailer or is it a 3ph mount? If it's a 3ph mount, can you mount it, raise it up high enough to be out of the way and hook up the trailer to the tractor's tow bar?

If you are going to do some modifications, I found this, mount the splitter on the trailer!

I've considered both mounting the splitter on the trailer as well as keeping it high enough to clear the trailer tongue (it's a 3 pt hitch splitter). I don't really want it perminately mounted on the trailer because I use the trailer for other things and sometimes i split in places where the trailer can't go. I think I'll have to lengthen the trailer tongue if I want to keep the splitter attached and tow at the same time. I'm still considering putting a trailer hitch on the rear of the splitter though to attach the trailer, just concerned about the weight of a loaded trailer/splitter on the 3ph...

Don't know about a splitter but I bolted a 2" receiver to the back of my snowblower for those times when I want to move one of the trailers during the winter.

I would worry about side to side sway more than weight on the 3pth. If its too heavy, it won't lift it. Just keep some tongue weight on the trailer as you load the wood.....

Could you change the 3pt mount so the splitter sits sideways to the tractor instead of hanging straight out the back? Then you could just lift it high enough to hook the trailer to the drawbar underneath. Might have to lengthen the hitch on the trailer a little.

Or mount it off the loader. Adapt a skid steer type quick attach; drop the bucket and attach the splitter up front. Then tow trailer behind.

Robert: My bush trails are pretty tight in spots so I'd like to keep it out back. As far as mounting it sideways on the rear, I'm thinking about simply welding a piece of square tubing to the bottom on the splitter (perpendicular) and that will let me slide it into my 3pt trailer mover. I'll keep the current setup for if/when i want it sticking out the way it mounts now. Thanks for the ideas...

Would be interesting to mount it sideways up front. Although, it would also be nice to fill both loader and tractor.
