Fellow Posters:

I have recently been looking at going back into a 3000 series machine with some different options. As you know I am running a 2320. I love that little tractor and might end up keeping it. One reason I downsized is that I most of my heavier work I was doing at my parents' mountain place and I subsequently hired out. That, and my ever-increasing work schedule limited my tractor time and I found my expensive larger machine just sitting--not good. It looks as though I am returning to a more-sane work schedule and now my parents have purchased 8 more acres which I will now--at least for now--have to help maintain. I have been most satisfied with my 2320 and probably will just end up keeping it. That said, when spring arrives a young man's heart turns to--tractors. I would love to have a mid frame again, but this time go with a mid mount mower to accommodate some of the tighter finish mowing I need to do. I have seen in much of the JD literature a mid mount mower operating on machines with the 43" or large R4's but I recall at one point these tires and decks were not compatible. Is this still true??? Also can anyone out there attest to how easily one of these autoconnect decks is to attach and detach. If I decide to do this purchase I would prefer to mid mount for hauling and mowing purposes but would not do it if it is markedly harder to attach and remove. Thanks for the input.

Get to the dealer and have one demo'd for you and with you on it.

I have a 3520 with the larger R4's and the autoconnect deck. No problems at all with clearance, and removing and installing is very easy! I agree with beenthere, go have one demo'd. Thats what I did and I changed my order that day from the standard to the autoconnect deck. Btw I also recommend the 72" over the 60" the extra width is nice to get closer to trees, fencelines, etc and the tractor has no problem running it. Happy tractor shopping!

I have a 3120 with the 72D Autoconnect. I can't answer the tire question exactly, as I opted for the turf tires, but a couple of comments. The rear tires can be set to either position, but the front tires have to be set to the narrow position. When set to the wide position, the tires contact the front guage wheel height pin when turning. Another note, I originally wanted the R4's but got a "too good to pass up" deal on the tractor with turfs. After using my 3120 side by side with my brothers 3720 (which has the larger R4's), I'll take the turfs hands down. Snow, grass, and loose dirt traction is much better with the turfs. The R4's look nice, but don't bite as well as the turf tires. Just my opinion.

As for the deck, I love it. At first, you will have to get used to where to place your front tires when driving over the deck. After some practice, I can install/remove the deck in less than a minute (most of the time is getting off the machine to lower/raise the guage wheels). I have only had one issue with mine where one of the lift bars (1/2" round bar) snapped on the deck. Dealer replaced the entire deck pan under warrantee and said go try to break it again. If I have another issue with it, I'll probably weld up a reinforcement strap. Otherwise, it cuts great, manuvers well (better than any rmf mower ever will), and does a good job. I mow about 4 acres of lawn, and it cut our time almost in half (from the 48" JD425 previously). I agree with the other poster to go with the 72" if you can. My brother has the 60" (standard deck) on his 3720, and is kicking himself he didn't go with the 72.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. Thanks.

I kick myself sometimes since I did not save my money up for a 72D. I opted for a used 72 7 iron and there are times I wish I had the 72D. I saved the money but I have yet to take off my deck since it was installed.

I have a 3720 with R4 tires and the older 7 Iron 72" MMM. I'd love to have the newer 72D Autoconnect mower but it wasn't available 3 yrs ago when I was buying. I'm thinking seriously of trading my older mower for the 72D Autoconnect. It's pretty slick and any bugs should be worked out of it by now.
