Holy deer Mark----I thought I was bad last year we went through over 1000 lbs all together and even more the year before. This year being so mild we haven't seen too many at all and have only gone through 400lbs. 3 yrs ago we would also have around 20 or so dear getting theirs,,,, mixed with about 15 turkey some times. I have still photos but no digitals. I just wish we could have that amount every year. Sure is fun watchign them out our living room windows. Shoot they would walk down the hill past the kitchen window only 20 feet away. We had one bambi that had some sorta birth mark on it's face (different color hair patch) and that was one of our favorites (scar face)...Haven't seen him or her again.. Oh well enough said and thanks for sharing.

Hey thats great lending a helping hand for our wildlife friends. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
Do you mix a little grain or deer pellets with the corn, also do you feed them in one spot?
If you want to get some good picture of wildlife in action...place a tall mirror by the feeding area and watch the fun begin.
If you have a bull moose don't try this w/a mirror more so if its rut season,or you will be picking up glass /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Mark:
We don't feed the wildlife around here because we have too many cougars. There have been some close calls. One of our neighbors was stalked by a cougar as she walked down a county road. She figures the only thing that saved her was a car that came along. A 6 year old child was dragged off into the woods by one and had to have 200 plus stitches to his face.

I remember hearing about the little boy on the news, also hikers being attack.
Over on this side of the coast mountains aren't common..yet??
Our biggest problem when the house dog or dogs go after the deer, than it gets nasty. /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif

Hey Darin, Thanks for the reply. This year has been really mild for us up here also.(record setting) This year we've only gone thru around only 800lbs so far (less than half of last years amount). Sure wish we had turkeys like you . They are only just making a come-back. Heard one once but havn't seen any yet. Towards the end of winter last year, some of the deer started showing up with mange. Large patches of hair missing. Also, some i hadn't seen before were coming to the feeder and they looked pretty starved! (they looked like greyhounds) I'm still still debating wether its a good idea to feed them at all for it seems they really depend on the corn. We've decided to limit the amount we put out this year. Here's another pic of the feeder . ........mark

Hey Thomas, we just put out whole shell corn and leave out a couple of round bales in the back field. Other than a couple of salt blocks , that,s it. Guys have seen timberwolves about 20 miles from here, but no cougars, Bob! That would be kinda scary. I'm sure if a child was attacked around here, it wouldn't be alive for long. Lot of hunters and trappers here. They shoot wolves up here and they are federally protected! Personally I don't believe in killing predators, because they have their place too. Legally, you are only allowed to shoot dogs chasing deer after the 1st of Jan. But it seems that up here, dogs are open season year round. Here's another pic of the feeder with the house in the background (its about a 100 yerds or so to the house) P.S. my wife and i built the whole place ourselves.........mark

I read about the controversy in Wisconsin about feeding deer. Some in the DNR and some hunters are claiming the hunters are not seeing deer in the public hunting grounds because so many private land owners are feeding deer. Others are saying feeding is un-natural and contributes to deer transferring disease more readily because of the close contact in the feed. Some feel they are helping get the deer through the winter, and others want to see the deer during the winter so they feed. Actual proposals being kicked about to curtail feeding, and some to ban feeding altogether. I am a feeder of about a gallon of shell corn a day. The corn is mostly cleaned up each morning and what is left is food for about 30 - 40 turkeys that visit during the day (most days, but not all). I tried to get a picture of the turkeys the other day, but they were too far away to see them well. Maybe another day it will work out.
