Hi Guys it has been a while since I've visited TBYN, but life at work just became impossible all of last year with tons of travel, 7 day weeks, and 18 hour days. Luckily the company solved all that this year by laying me off. Lots of tractor time now /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

My problem is I need to unload 2000 lb skids from a flat bed semi trailer and I need to know if there is anyway I can utilize my 3010 (I have 482A loader and 4690A backhoe) to accomplish this. Can the loader arms handle with forks? Is there a forklift attachment that can be purchased for either the 3 point etc etc. or should I just buy a fork truck. These are not stacked on the trailer and I do not need to stack them in the barn.

Any suggestions is appreciated.

thanks

bruce

I think you are out of luck. I don't believe your unit is big enough. I have a 5030 with an LA853 loader and the loader is rated at 1900 lbs. That's not quite a ton and that's a lot bigger loader than you have I believe. Sounds to me like a fingerprint job. If you were to manage to pick up the skids or material with the rollback of the bucket, you'd lift the rear wheels off the ground and with ballast on the back, you'd probably pop the relief valve anyway. An alternative would be to rent a large Bobcat like a 770 series with pallet forks and use it to move the material. I think you'd find the Bobcat to be much more agile than your tractor. We have a skid steer and my experience shows me that the manuverability far exceeds a wheeled tractor.
My previous tractor was an L-3710 and it positively did not have gross weight to handle 2000 pounds. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Bruce, I'd say others have pretty well stated that you cannot lift these skids with your tractor safely. What's on the skids and can you have some empties on hand to split them up? If you could split them by hand you could possibly handle them with your tractor. Just a thought /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you lived closer, I'd let you borrow my Bobcat. It does have a Kubota engine it. Funny thing, it's turbocharged and Kubota doesn't turbo their tractors.

Actually, the M8200, M9000, M110 and M120 are all turbo charged with a wastegate. All of the rest of the tractors are naturally aspirated.

We unloaded 20 skids (2000# + skid) of bulk soybean seed w/ my 250 Deere SSL, worked LOTS better than handling 800 50# bags by hand /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We have a truck dock, so seed and supplies are rear loaded. We have a 7500# Toyota hi-lo with a side shifter on it. About the only thing we side load is round bales. I have a spear that fits the Bobcat and it makes short work of loading bales. This year we are going to buy a carpet spear and attach it to a frame mounted on our articulated wheel loader so that we can load 2 rounds crosswise on a flatbed trailer at the same time. I know the Terex has the grunt, I broke the web chain in the tandem axle manure spreader last fall and I didn't want to shovel it out so I picked up the manure spreader with a chain on the tongue, got it vertical and shook the manure out with the loader. The terex got a little light on the rears but handled the job. The spreader was loaded with wet manure, must have weighed at least 10 tons.

Hoeman00:

I bet the Terex could pick up your Duramax and shake it too. I don't know if your tow hooks could stand the strain, however. The guy across the road has a Yukon and he got stuck in the ditch this winter. I took my Ford Powerstroke down and hooked a chain on his tow hooks and promptly pulled them off.

If we needed that much power, It would most likely be green, not orange. My 700 series Bobcat is in the 60 hp range, not much more than my 5030. It's turbo'd. is the turbo a IR add on or does Kubota build the entire powerplant for IR?
