I'm new here but have used other forums for help on my various 'other equipment'.

I have a 3016 that I was mowing with and it started making a scrubbing noise under the hood so, I shut it off and checked under the hood thinking that perhaps a stick had made it's way in there somehow. I didn't see anything so, started mowing again and it made the same noise again, I hit the clutch, and then stopped making the noise after a beat and so, I started back to the house to investigate further. About 50 yards later it started making the noise again and I decided to press on and ultimately the engine stopped. When I try to start it, the can hardly turn over and behaves like it has a dead battery. I trailered it back to the shop and put a 200amp boast on the starter..same.

Next day, I was able to get it to start. Normal black smoke initially, then some white smoke and then it stopped again and has trouble turning over again even with the 200amp boast. Off to the dealer we went.

Dealer put 300 amp and same behavior..no start, and turns over like it has a bad battery. All the dealer can say is, "she ain't happy" (it's a small town dealer). Dealer is mostly saying that they will have to get into the engine to figure out what is wrong and is saying it could be something simple or a 5k repair job.

I'm hoping someone here has some insight or experienced this before. I'm handy with a wrench and am thinking I'll do this myself but I am running short on special project time.

thanks in advance for any help,
Luke

The description is an interesting one. Sounds like it could be a couple of this combined. Some common causes for hard starting and stalling-

Bad battery cable- they look good but have internal corrosion

Bad fuel and or gelled fuel from cold

Plugged fuel filter or debris stuck at the outlet of the fuel tank

Bad battery

Will it run fine with the clutch in? Obviously that would eliminate it being almost anything south of the engine. The only thing engine related that it could be is a fuel issue- it’s getting just enough fuel to spin the engine with no load on it.

I’d start and restart with the basics. These little engines live an easy life and it would be rare for something catastrophic to happen. But I’ve read plenty of posts that thought the machine was done only to find it be something simple like listed above.

If I’m recalling correctly a guy punctured his oil filter and the engine stalled in a field. He put the new filter and oil in it and couldn’t get it started after. For about two weeks he went round and round thinking the engine was done. New cables and battery and he was back in action. I’m hoping it’s that easy with this one!

I got my tractor back and started taking a look at it. Switch the battery..nothing. Cables, nothing. I put a wrench on the crank pully and tried moving it and I could budge it. I'm wondering if where to get a repair manual for the 3016..Is tit available on the net anywhere..

Not sure on the manual but I’ll give this a bump.

Thanks. I was able to get a manual by digging around on the net. I pulled the glow plugs and tried turning it over and while it does seem to turn over a bit faster it's really slow. A buddy of mine said to pull the starter and have it checked but also was wondering if perhaps it spun a bearing. Would a motor crank slow iwith a spun bearing(s)?
