John Deere 850 - Yanmar 3110D
These pics show the front & back side of the front differential. It appears that on both sides, only a large metal ring remains. They can both be spun freely by hand. Also, the gaps are large enough to fit a quarter on each side of the ring.

Obviously this isn't correct. What is missing & how do I make it proper again?

Got to go but when I get a little time I will try downloading a picture showing shims and breakdown of parts.

Draining the front differential fluid: looks like laffy taffy!

Man this tractor needs some love!

I don't understand the photo. Could that be the front axle pivot that lets one front tire rise over an obstacle? If it is then that slop is harmless.

Yes, I believe you're correct. But, should there really be any slop? Does a new tractor have the same amount of slop?

Its harmless. So what if the front axle moves forward or back an eighth of an inch depending if its under load.

Just keep it greased at those zerks and forget about it. Maybe add a shim if you ever take the front axle off.

First off, let me apologize, I have lost my scanning abilities and my picture taking results are horrid. Maybe I will just bring you some copies if needed. But here is my best effort for conversation. This is out of an I&T manual that covers the YM330, the closest US sold to your 3110D, just talking about four wheel drive and engine, not power shift, pto, bla, bla, bla. Pretty sure the four wheel drive here will be real close to your set up.

The manual is pretty plain about the setting you are talking about. Here is the last sentence of instructions: Reinstall axle as described in paragraph 5, selecting correct thickness of thrust washers (56 and 70) which will limit end play of axle to less than .0079" without binding.

Doesn't appear complicated. Wouldn't be loosing any fluids in the process. Not opening up the 4 wheel drive.

In other words, Yanmar says maximum 8 thousands, not a quarter of an inch. Paragraph 5 mentioned above states spacers 56 and 70 come in 2, 2.3 and 2.6 mm thickness which would interpret to .0787, .090, .102". I would even wonder if these are available. Hoye lists a whole bunch of shims, I have no part number but they would. Might have to fabricate or have some fabricated. Rattled long enough.

Thank you Winston! #70 is for sure one of them.

Is it worth tearing down right now, or can it wait.... perhaps indefinitely?

Pretty sure 56 & 70 are the same. Two quarters would probably equal 1/8". Wouldn't doubt there is many an old machine out there running with more than that (not necessarily Yanmar). I wouldn't panic. Just personally, I couldn't live with it long term but that doesn't make it the right answer for you.

I know there are numerous 3110D owners out there, how much slack you guys have there? :anyone:
