I have a 1990 model 318. Today the right rear hub nut came loose and the washer is lost. The axle key was all the way inside and so I believe was not engaging the washer at all. I checked on the JD Parts web site and for the rear axle hub key ( if I looked at the right part) it shows M85332. But the part description says it is 12" long and mine are about 3 or so inch's. This seems rather odd. Also does this key sit all the way from the washer to the ring it rides against or does it need to be left sitting out so it engages the washer and then pushed into place by the nut when you tighten it?

Can anyone clarify?

Your part number likely refers to the key stock, and then the length needed is cut off from that. That way, the parts bin just has the different sizes for the many different Deere things that require different length keys.

I suspect it is a length it should be and is captured between the inside washer and the outside washer/nut or bolt.
