336D - 3 pt does nothing at all (most of the time). What should I check for?

I'm guessing crud/rust is sticking something but don't want to tear down more than I should. Where should I start?

change transmission/hydraulic fluid, clean suction screen, change screw on filter. No mention so without knowing condition of the previous that would be a starting point.

I am thinking maybe air in the suction side. Can I pull one of the flexible pressure lines and look for bubbles?

Pulled the fluid and strainer and it was pretty fuzzy.

I guess you could but you could also look through the dipstick opening.

Ahhh... yeah there's a line on the side that return fluid comes into. Would I be able to see if there's air?

Does the power steering work??

If it is air it will work itself out if you work the 3pt lever and steering wheel for awhile. Yours has an "open hydraulic system"....meaning that at one end of the hydraulic flow cycle the hydraulic fluid is open to atmospheric pressure and that is where the air will eventually go. Also check the vent under the seat. It has to be open.... and that's another source of water ingress. Put a downtube on the fitting to prevent water getting in there.

My bet is you may have to change hy-tran fluid and filters several times. You can filter & re-use the hy-tran fluid once most of the water is out. Get an anti-water filter/funnel at the hardware store. For filtering fine particles few things work better than letting the fluid sit overnight or longer in a clean container. Decant carefully or siphon.

There are some really good mechanics on this vintage Yanmar group. Lots of appreciation among mechanics for those vintage Yanmars.
They are simple machines, but high quality build.

It works! The plugged hydraulic screen in my other thread on "Is this the correct Fluid" (and likely also the filter) seem to have been the problem. I don't even have it all the way full (put 5 gallons in and not registering on the stick yet) and the 3 point seems to work as it should.

I will probably have to filter this fluid and change once more.

The fuel filter looks dirty as well. It sat outdoors for a year so I'll also pull the fuel and put in fresh.

I wouldn't be afraid to use the old fuel so long as you can get the thing started. If you can see water or debris, drain it into something, let it settle, and filter it like rScotty described for the hydraulic fluid.

Replacing the fuel filter, likely more than once, is what will protect the engine.
