337 and a 338 JD baler about the same . or is one better then the other. I am looking at a 337 and a 338 going to buy one of them just don't know yet.

A 338 is just a newer version of the 336/337 series. Don't think there's any real difference in design or construction between the two. I have a 337 with a 30 ejector (don't pull a wagon behind the baler, but it's fun to engage the kicker and watch it toss bales up in the air once in a while :) ) Took some work to get it right - replaced a bunch of spring teeth and strippers on the pickup, checked and reset the timing, added restrictors in the bale case, learned about bale tension and how you need to adjust it according to hay condition. Works like a charm now - misses a tie maybe once every few hundred bales.

Either the 337 or 338 would be good - I'd just look real close at things like chain/sprockets, knotter shaft play, tucker finger & twine knife condition, needle bearings and any evidence of contact with the plunger, bale case cracks, trip the knotters and and make sure they tie good knots when turning the flywheel thru a cycle by hand. Otherwise, pick the one that's cleanest and best maintained.

Good luck - hope you're in a better weather pattern than us... we've been rained on ~every other day for the past 4 weeks and haven't been able to cut a blade yet.

I don't know why, but the 327,337,347, seems to have a bad reputation. I don't know why even our local dealer ship told a friend of mine he would be better off keeping his 336 instead of getting a 337.

Ouch... that's not good at all! You'll still have to get it off the field, though. Know anybody with a silage baler?

If the price is the same and the condition is the same - I would go 338.
