i truly am amazed by this little tractor... i've not asked it to do one single thing it hasn't been able to...

but i am getting a bit nervous... recently, i've noticed that when i'm changing the position of the f/r lever, sometimes it doesn't engage... and it takes 2 to 3 times to get it to, sometimes eveng doing a bit of grinding, no matter how cautious i am being...

this is intermittent at present, but previous experience with machinery tells me that trouble lies ahead...

where is this headed?

I would spray lube the shifting mechanism inside the steering column and work it back & forth to loosen it up. Thats the first thing we do when we get new tractors in.

1st check your clutch adjustment and then maybe the adjustment on the cable that actuates the shuttle. These should be the 1st 2 possibilities to check out. If it is still under warranty take it to your dealer. Good luck with it.

Don't be nervous as it seems to be a problem with alot of 3510 models. I have gotten quite used to the little hiccup it throws going between gears F&R. You will soon tell, just by feel, when it does'nt or won't engage smoothly. No need to force it, or it will grind em a little. I just go back to the original selection, then back to the desired selection, at which point it will drop nicely into gear for you. All the above suggestions in this thread were good points, but my 3510 acts the same way and I have read where others have similiar experiences....

Mine did the same thing at about 200 hrs.

I looked at the linkage the bushing on the FNR and it showed a little wear, but the linkage looked fine.

I made sure neutral was centered on the shift colunmn and used a cutoff blade to "increase the amount of travel" to the reverse direction. Have not had a problem since. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would recommend correcting the problem one way or another. Grinding gears are not good! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My 3510 wants to do the same thing.

Here is how I avoid troubles.

Make sure you are at a complete stop before changing from Forward to Reverse.

Push clutch in and wait a few seconds for the clutch/gear assembly to slow down. Longer if using a high RPM 3Pt item.

If it won't go in, put lever in neutral, let cluctch out for a second or two, then press clutch again, just as it spins down.
