my cuz has a 3610 that you have to spin the starter a long time when it's cold. It is like it has lost it's prime in the pump. He has to give it a little shot of start fluid in the morning
to get it going. It will start the rest of the day after it gets going in the morning. Is there a check valve in the pump that would let the fuel leak by over a period of time.
when trying to start in the morning it will start hitting but you got to keep cranking on it to get it going. Thanks for any ideas

It appears that model could be had either in diesel or gasoline. If this is the diesel variety I'd start by making sure the glow plugs are good and then that they are functional. I would use them and not starting fluid. Check and clean battery terminals, connectors, and grounds. Cooler weather generally makes things harder to start. Be sure the summer dust is knocked out of your air cleaner, too. If you're interested you can find a little bit more information about your tractor at TractorData.com Ford 361 tractor information

Just a few questions
How cold is it outside? Do you see blue smoke when cranking but not starting? I think those have an oil bath air filter and if the oil is old or dirty it can cause problems with airflow when cold. Also try cracking the throttle open a little to put more fuel into the engine, sometimes if it's closed all the way down to idle that's not enough. Don't worry about it over revving, as soon as it fires off just bring it back down.

The fuel tank on the 3610 is located above the engine so a gasoline model would not have any type of fuel pump and the diesel would only have the injection pump so I assume the model is diesel. There are no glow plugs on these Fords and early New Hollands, but there is a pre-heater in the intake. I never use my pre-heater so I am not 100% sure how it is initiated. However, it is for cold weather starts.

As to your assumption the fuel is leaking out of the Injection pump while sitting, is there fuel on the floor where it is parked? Even if it leaked, since the fuel is gravity fed, it would not create an air void in the system.

The mechanical fuel pump is at full throttle when not running and the governor moves the fuel rack to reduce the fuel once running. Moving the throttle to give it extra fuel only will increase the idle speed once running.

As Tazz asked, is there smoke when cranking and when it first starts? If so what color? Do an internet search and you will find many outlines of what the smoke color indicates.

How many hours are on the tractor? As these are used, you lose compression and thus make it more difficult to start.

I don't know if this model used a shut off cable or already went to a shut off solenoid. Check to make sure the manual shut off lever is fully released before you try starting it when cold.

Good stuff Jim.

My 3910 is a bit cold blooded. If it's below freezing it starts slow. Rather than crank on the starter and burn it up, I give it a squirt of starting fluid. Very easy to do on mine. I use a block heater for Winter starting.

The injector pump is controlled with a mechanical cable. Pull knob to kill. Push knob to start.

4610 is the same. If it’s below freezing I used to have to jump it. Now that it stays in a garage that doesn’t go below freezing by much, I have no issues. I do still put a magnetic heater on the oil pan if I’m going to start it on very cold days too.
