I noticed a really small puddle of oil under the center of the JD 3720 awhile back and now after being parked for a day, there is a good size puddle underneath the tractor. I got underneath and there was grass wrapped real tight around the MFWD drive shaft. I took me about an hour to scrape/clawe/pull the oil soaked grass off. Looks like some grass worked its way into the bearing (looks like a sealed bearing) that holds the mfwd drive shaft in the transmission housing and oil is seeping though it. Has anybody else had this problem and is there a way of replacing the bearing without splitting the tractor in half? I called the dealer but they haven't gotten back yet.

For any reason this info is needed, the tractor is about 3 years old with 650 hours.. Haven't had a single problem with it since it was delivered to our place! :)

Sounds like you may have a hunk of weed/grass wedged between the shaft and oil seal causing the leak. Look closely for any debris in that area and you may be lucky enough to be able to dislodge it.

When I got under there, it looked like the rubber seal had a small chunk either missing or pushed in. We had the dealer replace the bearing and he said not only was there grass going into it but there was grass on the other side as well..

We use the tractor as a backup for raking and teddering hay. I know thats where the grass was picked up and I am going to make a plate to cover the access point so that it doesn't happen again. If you have driven your 3000 series tractor through tall grass or loose hay, might not be a bad idea to check before it becomes a 3 hour job for the dealer.

Thanks for the update. The shield is a good idea. Will look into making a shield for mine.

Can you post some pics of the area underneath the tractor?
