3820i Fuel Pump replacement - Aftermarket?

I have a 2009 3820i, and started having a problem with losing power at normal operating rpm, along with puffing whitish smoke from the exhaust. Well after way to long, and trying everything I could think of (glow plugs, filters, checking injectors and fuel pump), I had my dealer come out to do a service and look at the problem. I felt more than a little sheepish when, after checking a few things, he looked at the fuel shut off and reached over and moved it from the up position to the down position. Problems solved! Runs like brand new again! It was worth the embarrassment of not checking the most basic thing to have it fixed! Apparently, at least on mine, the up position allows fuel to flow, but restricts it.

I bet you did feel foolish. I have an earlier version of the 3510 and my lever was turned down in the correct position and I was having the same problem as you. I found out that the pins on the lever were not engaging the plastic valve and leaving mine shut partially off. I had to manually open my valve with a screwdriver after removing the lever and it has been in the open position for the last 7 to 8 years. If you still have problems check the valve. W.Jones

I received and installed my Mr. Gasket 12D fuel pump. Pointed the lever down. That is definitely the "on" position.

Started right up and runs great!! Only cost $28! Thanks so much for the info.

The "D" & "S" are "the same" except for the rec. fuel..
You would think that the S would cost more seeing its dealing w/ "caustic/flammable" liquid.?? & the diesel fuel would be self lubricating..
I don't get it..
