I have a 1985 Ford 1210, I have had it for about 7 years now. The 3 point hitch arms have started to go up and down when the control lever is in a mid range area. The up and down movement is about 1 inch. The rate and speed of the movement is the same at engine idle or at 1800 RPM. Adjustment of the flow control valve does not affect the oscillations, (this valve does seem to operate properly). When the control lever is in the full up position, the 3ph arms hold steady. When the 3ph is in the full up position and the engine is shut off the 3ph lowers, (it use to stay up). I have a 60 inch box scraper attached to the 3ph. What is the problem?

sounds like standard leak off and circuit regen. and the mid section of the bore may leak the worst.

cyl pressureizes and extends to where your linkage tells it to. then oil is dumped to sump.. oil in cyl leaks. lift drops till it hits position control linkage telling it it nweeds to regen. oil diverted to cyl again. rinse, repeat...

cyl volume makeup is minscule compaired to pump flow, which is why correction is instant at low or high rpms. this will make the lift look like it is bobbing..

I have looked through other threads and believe that my symptoms are consistent with the hydraulic piston seal leaking. I will be replacing this seal.

I have looked at the link from RDrancher about Spicer's TC40D 3 point bounce thread on his piston seal replacement. I also checked out the differences between the TC40D and my 1210 by comparing the illustrated parts drawing on Partspring.com. They appear very similar except that the TC40D has a removable cylinder tube, where as the 1210 cylinder is part of the lift cover assembly.

I am hoping that simply removing the cylinder head/flow control valve assembly will allow removal of the piston.

Can anyone that has done the piston seal replacement on a 1210 give me any specific pointers?

do you have the service manual?

Yes I have a Service manual that is produced by JENSALES. It is obviously a photo copy of a real FORD manual. The pictures are too dark to really see any detail. The section on the hydraulic system does not have R&R of the piston seal only that removal of the lift cover assembly to facilitate R&R of the hydraulic control. I actually get a better idea of the system by looking at the parts diagrams on PARTSPRING.com

Thanks for the additional link, I did not find that before. pclausen's piston and cylinder appear the same as a TC40D.

I am hoping for a reply from a 1210 owner about the hydraulic piston seal replacement. It appears to be a straight forward procedure, but you can never tell until you but the wrenches to it.

I will have time to work on the tractor this coming weekend.

Mine are bouncing a little with the back blade on & lifted. I can tweak the controls (lift lever & flow control) some and get it to stop with the bush hog hooked up.

I pulled it apart last night and sure enough the seal is split. New one is on order (apparently the new ones are made from gold $$). Only tool needed to get it apart was 3/4" box end wrench (also used a 3/4" socket / ratchet, but could do with just a wrench). There's three o-rings in there too to consider replacing as long as it;s apart.
