Quick QA, now I won't be doing this at all often, but it seemed to work. But is it good to do?

Working on some food plots I needed to disc up a 1/4 acre, well the 5' disc I have isn't heavy enough to break ground. I grabbed a substantial rock (small boulder) approx 400lbs. I used the FEL to put it on top of the disc. I chained it down to the disk so it doesn't move. I go to use the 3pt and lift the disc and I get to about 7-8 on the lever and you here the pump whine and it lifts a little but not off the ground very far; and you can tell it is just a bit too much. I guess with the rock further back the weight is great substantialized. I release the lever back down to where I don't heare the whine of the pump and it is just barely off the ground at a level of 6 on the control lever. I used it like this skimming the ground for travel. However the trail I have over to the food plot got tore up pretty bad. So when I was done, I thought hmmm, I have the valve under my seat to stop or slow the 3pt from lowering. So I turned it all the way to the right to lock things in. I turned the 3pt control lever to 10 you can hear the pump at this point, I then grab the rear of the disc with my hands, such like a deadlift/weightlift, with the rock on it to give it another 8-10 inches of lift. Then immediatly lowered the 3pt lever control back down to stop the pump whine. I carried the disc like this back to the barn 200' trip. The valve held the weight.

Is this ok, or a real NO NO /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

When you're trying to lift too heavy you put the relief valve in bypass. Continuted relief valve bypass leads to increased heat in the system, which can damage the components in the pump.

Relief is supposed to happen for short periods, and the operator usually will resolve the problem as soon as it hits relief.

Keep in mind that the drop speed knob is just that, it controls only the speed at which the 3pt falls, not lifts. If you lift weight higher than it is designed for, then lock the hitch, you're maintaining a weight that is considered too high for the lift. Anything can happen. By having it locked, and putting the lever in 10, you're still just making it hit relief and heating up the system.

Next time, just use a lighter rock. Going over the hitch's maximum for more than a few moments is not a good idea.

okay, sounds good, I'll use a lighter rock next time, or just live with the fact that my dirt trail through the woods will get a little messed up.

Thanks for the quick response

Could you move the rock closer to the 3ph?

Or maybe haul the rock in the FEL and load it onto the disc when you've arrived at the plot? Leave the rock at the plot.
