Sorry for the basic question but I am looking at getting a 3pt wood splitter and am unsure how they hook up. I have a rear hydrualic remote on my 2010 JD 3520, can I hook a splitter in to this or do I have to add another setup on like the power beyond kit?

I ran one off the rear remote on my JD for a very short time. I had to tie the lever back to get power and it was still very slooww. I then added my hoe with the power beyond and did it right. Works like a dream....1500rpm, I can listen to the radio while I split.
I actually ordered the tractor with a rear outlet for a woodsplitter, expecting the power beyond, but the salesman was new and thought I would hook the splitter cylinder to the 3rd valve, not realizing that the splitter had its own valve. It was a few years before I got around to getting a splitter and realized my problem

I have a Northern Tool 3pt wood splitter with which I split around 4 cords per year. It hooked up to the hydraulics at the back of my Kubota straight out of the box, no alterations needed (my tractor came with standard Kubota hydraulics for the backhoe I bought with it). The splitter cycle isn't fast but I rarely have to go full cycle into a log. Usually 1/3 to 1/2 cycle does the job.

The only fault is that the ram arm is a little prone to spot rust if it isn't fully withdrawn into the ram housing after use.

I've been using a regular remote to run my log splitter for some time. Just tie the handle on the tractor with a bungee cord. I did have trouble one time. I had the hoses reversed so the splitter traveled in the opposite direction than the lever is pushed. Cycle time is not to fast but I have no complaints. I run my engine just a little faster than idle.

For thouse of you without Rear Hyd output on your tractor. There are models with rear PTO Hyd pump and tank set ups. This is what I have.
Works as fast as I want at 1100 rpm. If I want faster cycle time, I up the RPM.... But that works me way too hard at my age. Still at 1100 it's fast as I can load, split, huck and reload.

Cheers

I have power beyond connectors at the back or my 3710 as well as valve actuated hydraulics back there. No matter which set I use the speed of the ram is the same (at the same engin rpm).

I do not believe you get a higher rate of flow with one setup vs the other..... the Hyd pump is the determining factor, so it seems.

On mine, the 3rd valve has 1/4" outlet lines, the power beyond line is 1/2" and the whole pump output travels thru it. When I tried the splitter at first the splitter had a 5" ram (which I have now changed to a 2 1/2"). With that big ram it DID make a difference in speed.

Again great info, one more the manual says the following:

Hydraulics:
Pump rated output 13.9 gpm
Steering 5.3gpm
Implement 8.6 gpm
Pump type dual gear
PSI 2500

Which number do I use for ensureing the right splitter the 13.9 or the 8.6?

If off the 3rd valve, then the implement volume, if off the power beyond you get to use the whole 13.9 (at full rpm).
In reality I have found that the only time I've seen much "high velocity" wood splitting has been when a couple of youngsters are splitting with a chick or two watching....Most of us just set a pace that is comfortable and can continue all afternoon with the occasional beer break. High speed leads to crushed fingers or worse.....
