Last weekend I replaced my left side step. It had been crushed by a log that popped up under the tractor. Turns out I was able to recover the step, with the help of a 6 pack and an evening with my press, vice and huge cresent wrench ;)
I had already purched the replacement step. OMG they are proud of those side brackets!!! They are heavy duty, but...sheesh $33 each!!!

I noticed that the bracket under the floorboard has the holes on the right side for a step so I mounted my old step on the right. Now I rarely get on the tractor on the right because of the joystick and throttle, but every so often I find it usefull. Plus the step adds protection to the hydraulic hardlines.

The catch is that you will have to remove all the bolts on the floorboard to lift it up enough to get access to the front, inside nut. They didn't think that one through. I drilled an 1" access hole. The big cast brace, under the floorboard appears to have been designed by commitee. Very quirky. See my Doesn't Care thread.

Deere didn't put a step there becouse they don't want you entering from the right side. Can you say SAFETY!!! hydro loader levers, hydro pedals?

sigh, well that's all well and good but occasionally find myself in a position to really need to get in from the wrong side. In which case you just have to be really careful. In these cases the parking brake is already on so the hydro pedals are less an issue than they otherwise would be. Just like when I remove the blade guard from my tablesaw, or when I remove the tip guard from my old trimming chain saw... That thread has been well played here.

It's a lot less dangerous that some of the other things I've done for fun ;)

Besides it helps protect the hydraulic hardlines until I get time to make up some brackets for the skidplate.

If your seat sensor is working, the hydro pedals are defeated anyway when there is no weight on the seat. I find myself using the right side on occasion too. Just bent my left step a couple days ago as well, but not too bad. Just pushed it back a couple inches. The tractor looks faster now as the step sweeps back. I almost like it.

Enjoy your new step.

What works for you... I don't think I have ever got onto a tractor from the right side before. Even old ones without loaders or hydro's.

Not saying you can't get on and off on the right side. But the problem is the person getting on the tractor isn't the one that gets hurt most of the time. I have heard to many storys of someone buying a used tractor that someone has altered. They don't know any better becouse someone has jumped the seat switch, removed a gaurd, etc. they run over thier child or someone else an either hurt or kill them. This is sad for them but then the lawers get ahold of it an the first one they sue is the deep pockets the manufacture. Then becouse it's cheaper to settle out of court they do. Now they pay out all that money to them an where do they get it from. The next tractor or parts we have to buy.

So to all of you keeping up the darwinism by altering safety items. We want to say thanks for the higher prices.

I too have seen the holes under the floorboard assembly for the right side step. If they didn't want you to attach something into those holes, they should have not added the additional bracketing to the assembly. The bracketing is not a multi-use item so it cannot be more cost efficient to build it that way. There are times that a right side dismount is required. For example, working with the left side of the tractor very close to a wall.

That being said, I think I am going to try to mount a tool box there.

My Case-IH Dx29 hst has left and right sided steps. I ordered them both from the dealer. Left step is listed as a part.

I bought my 3520 Oct 2005. I noticed the holes for a step on the right and ordered one from my dealer. Two months later they called me back and said JD would not sell them a right side step for liability reasons. So I ordered a left side step (same part numbers) and it took them until Dec 2006 to call and say my step was in.

I did this because I had injured my knee stepping up to the platform on the right side when the tractor was positioned so that I could not get on from the left.

I am extra careful when I use the right side step for obvious reasons, usually shutting the tractor off, hydraulics relieved etc... I could sue JD for not putting a step on the right side just like someone can sue for injuring themselves by using the step. However, I choose to be responsible for my own actions.

I would think a little common sense here would go a long way. Then again, maybe common sense isn't so common anymore.

Make it stout enough to help protect the loader hardlines and you will have a winner mod.
