While we're on the subject of Hydraulic Suction filters....I've got 40 hours on my 3520 so I'm getting ready to do the 50 hour Engine Oil Change...looks like the general consensus is not to mess with the Hyd oil for a little while longer...The dealer told me to change out the Engine Oil, but not to worry about the Trans/Hyd till about 150-200 hours.
Is it possible to remove & clean out the Hydraulic suction filter without dropping all the oil? I figure it wouldnt hurt to at least clean it out.

I did mine at 50hrs. You can do it without losing too much fluid but you have to be quick. I think I lost 2-3 quarts. Make sure you have a large drain pan and rags handy.

Dave, I agonized over this about one year ago on whether to change hydraulic oil/filter and front diff oil on my new 3720 at 50 hrs. I got a lot of conflicting info about when to do it so I decided to play it safe and do it all at 50 hrs -- engine oil & filter, transaxle oil & filter, and front diff oil. Yes, it's expensive but it gave me peace of mind. I believe a fair number of owners on this forum change all at 50 hrs.
If I remember correctly the owner's manual states 200 hrs for trans and front diff but the decal under the hood specifies 50 hrs. I'm not sure what the latest (one year later) decals specify. I was hoping that JD would make this less confusing and maybe they have by now. Just letting you know about my experience.

I have a 790 and my dealer also told me not to replace the Hydraulic oil at 50 hours. So I replaced the filter but have worried about hydraulic screen especially since it is a gear tractor and you can't help but grind the gears once and a while and I'm put lots of hydraulic accessories on it which could have introduced dirt into the system. I might change my mind and replace the hydraulic oil sometime this year.

My brother is a Mechanical Engineer by trade and his place of employment has a "Lubricant/Lubrication Engineer" for lack of better terms and he's who ultimately made my mind up about not having to change the oil at 50 hours..The engineer's point of view and data of the fact that the additave packs in Hydraulic oils Last a LONG Time compared to Engine oils where alot of combustion by products get introduced into the oil....He said that the single biggest problem with Hydraulic Oils would be condensation (water) & contamination from other fluids...YES, small filings will be present in the oil from initial break in, but thats what the filters are for...He did reccomend I change the filters and such....
We changed the oils on the Kubota L2900 for the first time @ 100 hours and we now have 900 trouble free hours on it...so I was shooting for the 100 hour mark for the Trans Oil swap...
