JD 3320
I've been reading these forums for awhile, and have seen many threads about the 50 hour service for various JD machines- folks buying all kinds of filters, oil, grease etc and some dealers charging up to $500 for the parts/labor. Well, I'm nearing that time so went to look at my manual to get a list of all the stuff I'll need for my 3320- all it reccomends (other then checking some stuff and some grease to the fittings) is to change the engine oil and filter! They don't specify changing the transmission and fuel filter until 400 hours, the front axle at 600 hours and the hydraulic filter at 1200 hours. What do folks think about this- should I go ahead and change the other fluids at least yearly (or by hours depending on which comes first), every two years? Are these machines so different from previous machines or was the maintenance on the other machines overkill?

Not overkill...

The maintenance, per your manual, is based upon a lot more annual usage hours then we residential users put on the machines.

As far as the oil change...definitely at 50 hours since that's break in oil.
As far as the hydro oil...well, 500 hours may take 5 or 6 years to accumulate. IMHO, that's too long. So, again, IMHO, I'd go for one year's usage, then do the initial change of the hydraulic fluids.

After those initial changes...

As far as engine oil...I'd suggest annually, regardless of hours. That's what I do.
As far as hydraulic fluid, I'd go biannually.

So, there you go...

As far as the owner doing the work...engine oil changes should be no problem. Plenty of access to the oil filter and such. Also, you're looking at 6 or 7 quarts, maximum (my 790 has a 4 quart capacity...oil's really clean after 50 hours beyond the first oil change).

As far as the hydraulic oil...that will be 5 or 6 gallons (more or less). Rather the owner does the fluid changes or has the dealer do it depends on if the fluids can be captured and disposed of by the owner. I haven't had to change my hydraulic fluid yet, but I'll probably send the tractor to the dealer then. Front axle fluid changes..not much capacity there, but my intent is to get the dealer to change it when I have the hydraulic fluids changed.

New member here, though not new to tractors...I am in the same situation, with about 52 hours on a new 3720. Though the manual doesn't suggest the hydraulic oil be changed, I will be replacing all fluids at 50 hours. This is inexpensive preventative maintenance as far as I am concerned. I'll do the work myself, and only have to be concerned with the cost of fluids and filters. In fact, my JD dealer told me to come see him when I need materials for the first service...I think he is going to give me a nice discount due to the fact that I spent nearly $25K
