I've had this YM2200 for 15 yrs and never really thought about it much but was thinking and decided to ask, why was there 4 speeds on the pto on these tractors? I know the slowest speed is 540, that's where I usually run mine. But what uses did the Japanese guys have for the other 3 speeds?

I was told by the dealer when I bought it that "you can sling a brand new bush hog all to pieces if you run it faster than 540".

Why 4, no clue. I do know I run my ym2002d in 2nd when tilling at times and I don't believe it has ill effects on the tiller. And have read on these forums that the tillers are the reason for the multiple speeds. Whether that is actually true or not I don't know. Does seem like 4 speeds is going to the extreme, for that matter, the 3 speeds I have seems extreme. I will confess I use the 2nd speed at times with mowers when mowing light stuff being careful to keep the pto rpms around 540.

Good question, I'll take a stab at it , first off all our tractors were built to operate an array of PTO driven implements, Mainly I think was the Rotor tillers. In which depending on size of tiller were required a certain speed in order to operate at optimal performance,
having 4 speed PTO certainly must have a purpose, Perhaps used for some sort of hay cutting implement where is required faster travel speed and a faster PTO operation, or perhaps a Generator, where the tractor is stationary and only the PTO is being used,
My smaller YM1700 has 3- speeds PTO and I rarely if ever have I used the 540, while not lacking in HP for the tractor itself, when using a Brush cutter I'll need to keep the travel speed slow and engine speed / PTO speed high in order to cut efficiently and not to bog the engine,
I know of many PTO driven implements we will try and use with our tractors here in the US, But I would be interested in knowing what implements were actually used with our YM's in Japan?
This would be a good topic for someone to inform us of all the deferent implements our tractors were designed to use and at what PTO speeds were required,

PTO speed options give you more flexibility in the attachments you can run efficiently. Tillers have been mentioned. Then theres blowers and pumps and something you might make yourself. Many things require the final mechanical element running faster than 540. Belting has limits for speed change ... gear tranmissions less so but theyre expensive. To have speed options built in is priceless in the long run. The original, built in, cost is small ... and you can run any attachment at your pleasure.

After reading up a bit it seems the easy answer is because they use the tractors for not only planting and harvesting rice in Asia, but for processing as well. in many areas it's the only power source they have so the PTO is used in a variety of applications, to power generators, threshers , pumps used to drain and fill the rice fields, etc. Good topic, I'm still reading up on it.

I dont why there is 4 gears but I use 3 of them and pretty happy I have them now its a good question though never heard the official reason yet! fwtw I till with a 540 tiller in second gear at a lower rpm maybe 2k so its probably spinning at 750-800 as a guess? I have mowed in 2nd also but that didn't work as good as the tiller does takes more hp to mow thick grass maybe.

My 3pt 25k generator will make as much power as I need in 3rd gear @ 1000-1200 rpm and stay in the green/240v. So I could conceivably run my tractor a few days per tank of fuel rather than maybe 1 with it wound up @ 540 in 1st.

Didn't mean to start a post and not check back in on it but I haven't even signed on or checked my mail in days, been too busy.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't thought about generators or pumps being used but that does make good sense. And gives me good ideas too.

I have a big squirrel cage fan I've been pondering on for a couple of years now about building the 3ph rig and running it off the Yanmar PTO to blow my leaves out of my yard and into the woods. I'll have to work on that thought. It runs on 1735 RPM now so the higher Yanmar speeds should work ok.

My guess #1: 540 CW, 540 CCW, 1000, 2000
#2 540 CW, 540 CCW, 750, 1000
3# 540 CW, 540 CCW, 1000 CW, 1000 CCW

My guess #1: 540 CW, 540 CCW, 1000, 2000
#2 540 CW, 540 CCW, 750, 1000
3# 540 CW, 540 CCW, 1000 CW, 1000 CCW

?? :confused3: Are you guessing that is the speeds on your 2200? I believe all are clockwise and probably the same as the 2210. 547,700,929,1231 at around 2200 engine speed.
