Thanks for all your input, it's been invaluable and quite the learning experience! I'm very new to this site, but I've enjoyed observing the candor and willingness of members to share insightful information.

Why not on paved surfaces? Ive been running both L35's in 4wd all the time since 1998 and no problems have arrived. )</font>

With a full bucket and a sharp turn on pavement you could blow almost any piece of drivetrain between the tranny and a front wheel! Please don't do it!

The neighbour blew the input flange on the front axle of the tractor I use by turning on pavement in 4wd this past winter. Just ker-snap then the driveshaft dropped out! 400$ for a 2 lb part.

Geeze on my Ford 2120, it was $1700 for a set of front differential gears installed when I (my ex wife) loaned my tractor out over 10 years ago and the guy beat up the front end. $400 is a bargin in my book /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Also as far as the front drive shaft spinning, when you are out of 4WD, the drive shaft has no connection to the transmission, and is also not "hard" connected to the front end. I suspect it spins due to friction in the front differential.
