Ford 1920/MF 1130/ Ford 8N/New MF 491!
I am very seriously considering a 491/4wd/canopy/1070 fel as my new utility/loader/hay tractor. It's main competitor is a TL90. Is there any "known" problem areas with the 400 series? Any owners out there want to brag or cuss'um?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Appreciate any and all suggestions.

I own a 451 and although it is 40 some odd hp smaller than what you are looking at it is an awesome farm tractor it is built simple, strong, heavy, and it has a Perkins diesel. I highly recommend the 400 series I would like to have a 471 or 481 to complinet the 451 well maybe some day. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yep - that well describes my old MF 1130 too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. The thing that troubles me is that I can get more features( 12x 12 mech shuttle trans and modern erogonomics) for just about the same money on a NH TL90. Of course, my "old Fashioned" 1130 is still pullin about 120 hp 35 years later - I wonder how many of the computer controlled electro-hyd wonder tractors will last that long?

We just got rid of a 1100 last year man was that thing ahead of its time the only reason we traded it was it was a little big for round baling . But it would run circles around the neighbors 4020 and its a nice tractor.
Around here the Massey can be got for alot less than the New Hollands. How much are the 5400 series Masseys.
I guess with all the trouble I have with the chicken house I just perfer the simpleness of the 451. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would say the engine itself will last as long but the elctronic stuff will give out from corrosion and so on much earlier. On a cabbed tractor I wouldn't worry as much about the electronic control stuff as long as you keep things somewhat clean. On an open station tractor I wouldn't want it.
Whenever I buy a newer tractor I'll most likely get the 471 or a 481 over a NH. I just never really have cared much for NH/Ford tractors, trucks yes but not the tractors.
The MF 400's are just simply built farm machines, for cattle/hay work they are perfect.

ahh it's good to see another fellow Tennessean here who knows what brand of tractor rules the world (actually, the best-selling tractor line in the world).
I just bought a 471 about 3 months ago, and I've put it through some pretty rigorous paces already. Here's my honest, albeit biased opinion..
configuration is 4wd, platform, 8X8 shuttle, FEL w/ M446 loader (Bushhog),
the engine is outstanding of course (same engine in 471 -- 492); the platform is wide and comfortable, and whatever is in the way is soon outta the way. loader is super fast, thanks to the ferguson hydraulics (even faster with the combining valve). fuel consumption is much less than I anticipated - I have about 20 hours hard labor on it, and have added only 10 gallons so far.
my gripes are: first day on the job, found a short in the instrument cluster - but on the bright side, the dealer replaced the whole cluster rather than try to rewire. the linkage on the shuttle shift is held in place by a drift pin of all things. it already shook loose once, but it won't again after my modification. that's the worst of it.
and i've used this tractor hard...as you should the first 50 or so hours.
as for my recommendations.. definitely get the 4wd. it makes this 73 hp work like a 100 hp. the 491 has the exhaust up through the center of the hood, which is great for clearing the lift arms (471 is on the right side, VERY close to the lift arms). consider buying the quickie or bushhog loader however. if you compare, you'll see that the MF loader ain't near as good. and finally, if you get the 491, you can't get the shuttle shift, and I wouldn't have a tractor without it. but on these 400 series tractors, you still have to use the clutch when shuttling, unlike the more expensive models. ..
and the best thing - you won't be looking out over some slopin' hood...it's like the nose of a peterbilt, the way a tractor oughta be!

My local MF Dealer has a 1070 fel with hd bucket and bale spear that was mounted on a new tractor and brought back to the dealer not used - the "owner " is selling thru the dealer for 5k. He is offering to sell me a package 491 4wd/fel/canopy/gril guard/ballasted rears for 31k flat - what do you think?? The transmission is what keeps me lookin at a "newer" design. A TL 90 with shuttle can be had set-up the same for around 32.5k - tough chocies!! Does anyone have a 4300 MF or 5400????

Price sounds kind of high but then again Ive never priced the 491. What I liked about the 400 series is they are a basic tractor with aux hydraulics standard no other brand offered this. With the others it was this is better tractor lets add hydraulics smaller tires they were about 3000.00 more this is not alot for some but for me it was.
Both my brothers have 5000 series JD one is a 5420 with 4wd Power shift and loader the other is a 5300 . The 5420 is used mostly for haying and loader work but weve never used all the gears on the thing. So I guess what you need to ask yourself is do you need all those gears.

I have only seen the MF1070 loader in pics but it looks sweet. It beats the Bush Hog M446 loader in the spec's dept. with 3100-3500 lift capacity (depends on the version) at 31.5" to max height compared to 2300 for the Bush Hog M446
