Where do you check the level on the rear end?? I can't seem to find a plug to check level. I probably have seen the plug just did not know what it was. Thanks

A square headed plug screwed into the hydraulic pump cover. located behind your right heel as you are seated on the tractor. This is for an 8 speed 3 cyl 4000. Selectospeed's will be different.

yes it is a 8 speed trans. there is a grease fitting in the pump cover?? could this be where you check the level?? I looked at it and for the life of me I see no reason for there to be a grease fitting on the pump because the grease is not greasing anything it just builds up on the inside of the pump cover?? someone may have just screwed the grease fitting into the pump cover to be used as a plug I am not sure. but the hole the grease fitting is in is a small hole. I would think that the level checking hole would be bigger?

IIRC, the check plug is near the 11:00 position on the pump cover. I suppose a 1/8" pipe thread zerk would screw into the hole, but I am thinking the tappeds hole is actually a machine thread in this application. There is no reason to have a zerk in the pump cover except it is what was lying around when the need arose.

The grease zerk is at about the 3:00 position I will look for the plug you are talking about, but I would think the fluid level would need to be higher to allow the differational to run in the fluid and lubricate itself???

My bad. I was working on my 4000 yesterday afternoon and the level plug is in the pump cover at about 3:00. The differential and pinion shaft are splash lubed from the ring gear. It won't hurt to run it a gallon or so over if you want. Later tractors of the same design have the level plug higher in the rear axle center section for increased sump capacity.

Thanks RICKB for the info. I called myself looking for a plug at about where I thought the level would be but could not find one. The grease zerk had me scratching my head trying to figure out why there would be a grease fitting just shooting grease into the rear end. There was nothing I could see that it would grease. The guy who had it before me had sure been greasing that fitting. There was a handfull of grease on the inside of the pump cover. If he had only greased the bushings in the clutch and brake pedals the same way I would have had less of a headache. thanks matt
