I am looking at a low hour, well maintained 4005 with a 300CX and would be interested in hearing about ownership experiences, and comments on how a 300CX equipped tractor does with round bales. I don't hay myself, but I would need to unload (non-18 wheeler double stacked trailers), stack, and feed probably 1-2 bales a week.

The tractor looks solid, and what I would want in a CUT aside from the lack of HST. I get the sidestep the plastic and Tier IV stuff on today's new CUTs, which I like the thought of.

This depends on the size of the bail. The tractor itself is rock solid reliable and based on the old 850-950-1050 JD's chassis of the 80's. If the bails are 4x4 you'll have little problem. 4x5 and packed dense, you could be looking at over a thousand lbs which the tractor is supposed to be able to handle. If they are 5x5, I'd want a bigger tractor. Full height capacity on the 4005 I believe to be around 1250lbs. and you can juice this up with the addition of washers in the control valve. Load up those nice 14.9x24" tires and you should be good to go. Brand new these things went for around 15K.

Ive had mine about a year now. Real basic tractor with guts, feeds 4 x5 bales no problem, drags 9' disk .2bottom plow.a little weak in loader strength but that can be fixed with a shim kit, JD should have built it with rear remote though!
