400cx Broken Piston Rod

Hey guys. Just thought I would see if anyone has ran into any issues with the JD 400cx loader. Got a text this morning from my father-in-law about the FEL on his tractor. Apparently he broke the bucket tilt piston. Anyone run into this before?

Did he hit or push something with the bucket /forks tipped all the way down ? Most of the time it bends the rod or linkage not breaking the rod like that by back dragging..

This is not a common failure. Generally this failure is a result of utilizing the loader incorrectly, such as back dragging with bucket edge, digging with pallet forks, driving forward with the pallet forks making contact with a stationary object, or other action outside of the performance envelope. When the cylinder is at full extension it is at its weakest point. It would be interesting to hear what action was being performed when the cylinder broke. However based off the break on the rod, I am going to guess it was not "normal" use.

The weird thing is, it broke half way down the rod. I know its from him beating the crap out of the tractor. Just thought it would bend before it broke. In fact I've seen him run the bucket into a stump to get it out. **. It finally gave up when they were turning over the burn pile this morning.

Wow some people just never learn, A new piston is probably $$ but he has it so no big deal......

32 years of back dragging here and never broke anything. In fact I've never heard of it being a problem.
