Purchased my 4035 last Summer with a 485 backhoe attached. First thing I did was have the sales person remove the backhoe so I could put the tractor to work cutting brush, drilling post holes, moving gravel, etc. etc. I致e finally got things enough under control I壇 like to put the backhoe back on so I can play with it some this Fall and Winter.

My concern is, I may have forgotten how to hook it back up, and the dealer did not provide a manual for the backhoe. I have searched the internet looking for a manual but no luck. Can anyone here point me in the right direction or provide some advice on hooking the thing back up. I had two other people watching the unhook as well as myself, so I am pretty sure we can handle it, but something on paper would sure be nice.

I would also appreciate any advice on using the backhoe, I have seen operators bring the rear tires off the ground and I have seen some bring the front tires off the ground. And others seem to keep all four tires on the ground. Again, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

From what i remember, just take the weight off of the tires with stabs an bucket. No need to lift the tires all the way off the ground. Like in my picture below.

I have a 5035HST and 595 hoe, which is PROBABLY simular to your setup [ just bigger.. :) ]. The backhoe manual does not really cover unhooking or re-installing the backhoe. It is one of those things that will take you a long time to do safely the first time, but after that, won't be that much of a deal. The first thing you have to do is remove your lower 3pt arms and associated lift arms/etc. I take mine off, then assemble them back together on the ground, then hang them up for the next time you will need them. Keeping the stuff together like that helps you not to loose stuff, plus... you can see how it is supposed to fit together at some future date. Next, back the tractor up close enough to the hoe that you can hook up the hyd lines between the tractor and hoe. Tractor off, move the loader joystick around a little to settle the hyd system pressures, then hook up the lines. Hopefully, your hoe hyd lines were marked with a colored tyrap... or some other way... so you can install them correctly. If not, you have a 50-50 chance of getting it right. Hook up the lines, start the tractor. My rear hyd outlets control lever is beside my seat, I then move this lever rearward and hook in the rear position with the hook provided to keep it in that position. Anywhilst, not knowing your setup, there must be something simular provided to keep flow going to the rear hyd ports on your tractor. If you hear the motor lugging, or something sounds funny... then you have the two hoses going to the hoe backwards... Once you get hyd power to the hoe... then the fun starts. The following is a simple process...but you have to do it in a safe manner... tractor at idle... slow movement of the hoe controls... watch your arse.. etc. Basically, you raise the hoe up with the stablizers... back the tractor up where the lower two hoe pins are just above the notches on your tractors 4pt slots...... then lower the hoe down into the slots with the stablizers.... then tilt the hoes top pins up towards the top slots of the tractor 4pt so you can install the wedge pins [ using the boom and/or bucket ]. Once you play with it... you will see that by moving the stablizers unequally [ different heights ]... you can crab the hoe sideways in regards to the tractor. Also.. you can use the bucket and masts to move it in different directions.. depending on what you need. Just play with slowly, and carefully... next time... you will be a pro. GOOD LUCK...!!!!

Got the backhoe hooked up. The first attempt did not go well. After watching the video for a second time and realizing the top pins needed to be rotated backward so the bottom pins hook onto the bottom notches it took all of about five minutes to hook it up. All is working well now.

One quick question, at what RPM's should the tractor be running when using the backhoe. For what little bit of playing I have done with it so far, I have kept it at idle and that seems to work OK.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I run mine about 1200-1400 or so... sometimes idled down... but I am not a pro like Brandi and the rest... Speed is not an option when you can't walk and chew gum at the same time... :) Has lots of power even at idle...

Yeah, I've found a bit off idle fine for light digging and flower bed building I've done. Upping the RPM's has helped with hard rocky ground and lifting logs and tearing brush and trees.

Can anyone help I would like to know the difference between the 485 and the 488 model JD backhoe, and which would suit a John Deere 4520 4 wheel drive
