Have 40d with 20 hrs. When in high (either range Rabbit), Icannot get any torque out of HST. Low rabbit reverse, backing up 20 degree grade, no implement down, tractor refuses to spin, just sits as if to be passing oil. is this a feature or a problem.

In cold weather. tractor has to run a Half hour before tractor idles without "bumping between 800-1100 rpm every 2 seconds. Cold hearted engine or issues?

I also have a fogged instrument cluster.

Tractor will perform well at 2200 rpm and above. I am used to JD being able to do chores at much lower rpm. Does this engine and frame size need rpm to perform tasks.

Thanks,
Jeff

I have not driven an HST enough to give you specifics.. but will comment on hyd's in general, and relate a situations ideas I have heard from others.

I believe these machines use a relief valve to regulate power to there drive train. It is possible that the relief may be poping over too soon... perhaps a trip to the dealer may correct this.

I'm not certian at what rpms should be used.. but would guess that you shoud be able to do some usefull work in the 1500 rpm range.

I have a 1920.. and if I am not using the pto, or dulling a heavy load ( discing ) I don't run the engine at rpm speed ( 2450 ) I use about 1500 or so.. whatever sounds good... And I can spin my ag tires while at 1500 engine rpm, if I hit a stop/load. ( like pulling into the barn just a tad too far and hitting the 8x8 support and 2x6 walls... )

Jeff,

Sounds like something isn't right with your tractor. I'd check the HST / hyrdraulic oil level. Sometimes when the dealer adds The FEL, they forget to fill the oil back up. Assuming the right amount of oil isn't the cause or doesn't fix the problem, have your dealer take a look at it.

As far as the rough idle, check your fuel filter for clogging or water. If that doesn't fix it, again its a new tractor it should have been working right from the beginning.

I like to check the basics myself, helps to familiarize me with the tractor. Also will save money down the road when the warranty runs out.

Good luck & welcome to TBN.

I think you're all OK, but could be the hydro relief is set a little light. Low rabbit should get most things done without popping the relief, you may want dealer to check.

Sounds like your idle is set too low. 1000 to 1100 is the lowest. If you try to set the minimum too low, as it sounds your's is, it will "hunt" as you describe.

Join the crowd of the fogged instrument panel. Many have had then replaced, with no change. A few have one that don't fog.

I would say problem because my 35D has NO problems like this.
W/ the 84" MMM I have hills in the 20+ degree range and can mow up
them in low rabbit at full speed (6+ MPH).

Thanks all.
I am less concerned about the idle. Yet somewhat wondering about the power tranfer to the wheels. The other tractors I have had with HST have a lot more torque to the wheels, they were also spinning tires about half the size.

I have had the relief valve "noise" since day one.
I know this has been talked about before, has anyone been able to beat it, it would be nice to hear the engine instead of the relief valve.

Thanks again,

Jeff

A 20 degree slope in HIGH range is going to be tough for any tractor. In high, the gear range allows the tractor to travel somewhere around 16 mph. Even a gear tractor with the same top speed typically won't get up a 20 degree slope from a dead start in 8th or 12th depending on the arrangement. In medium or low as my tractor has, nothing will keep it from getting up the hill providing I'm not pulling a loaded boxscraper or equivalent. As far as spinning tires, it is easier to spin tires at half the size since the foot print is smaller and the weight on them is much less while the horsepower typically is less then 25% to 50% different. In low range and rabbit or turtle you should be able to spin the tires or climb a 20º grade. I think you have a problem and should talk to your dealer. ...my two cents.

Just so you know, the typical complaint on the noisy relief valve is not the same relief valve that we are talking about on hydro performance. The noisy one only controls the flow to the hydro cooler.
