410 d 4x4 axle problem

my 410 d rear axle wont engage only the front will engage any ideas

I am guessing( since you didn't tell us what make it is) this is a JD backhoe. More info would be helpful, If only the front axle is pulling somthing in the rear end is broken. The trans must be ok since the front wheels turn. Is there a short driveshaft between the trans and rear end on this machine

Without more info, it could be the drive clutch is slipping, but the hydraulic pump is working and the front axle has a wet hydraulic clutch that is engaging the front axle. Just a guess from what you posted.
