4100;4110;4115 reliability

I was checking out the John Deere 4100,4110, and 4115 size compact tractors and read in reviews that some guys have had trouble with the front axle prematurely failing with costly repair.Has anyone had any such problems with this? I know that some people think that these tractors are "indistructable" but like anything I understand that one has to use some common sense in what you can do with size machine. Its not a D6Cat!!!

I have not heard of any axle problems at all, definitely not on this site anyway.
My 4110 has been bulletproof...

The only common front axle problems i remember was with the 4x00 series, like the 4400, 4500, 4600. They had a problem when turning hard they would tear up turf pretty bad. There was a DTAC and they where replaced if the owner complained.

Have to say that I agree with kennyd in that I haven't read anything in the forums about axle problems in the 4100/4110/4115 tractors. My 4110HST has been trouble free since I purchased it in 2003. I have been very pleased with it and am amazed at what I have accomplished with that tractor on our property and on my neighbors' properties. My wife uses it as much as I do, so I'd have to comment on it being "user-friendly", as she wouldn't go near our old tractor.

I bought a 4115 back in 2002, So far no major problems. Great little machine. I originally bought it to snow blow the driveway but I ended up also buying the FEL and I am continually amazed at what I can do with it. back in November I used it to lay down 63 tons of hard pack on my drive. I am definitely very happy with it.

My 4100 developed a slow oil leak in one front axle seal. Nothing major, but it was annoying and messy. It looked to be corrosion related - I had to clean up the some pitting on the shaft as well. New parts were cheap enough and I was able to do the work myself, but I would have thought it would go a bit longer before having problems. Tractor is a 2000 and had about 700 hours at the time.

Thanks for all of the replys. I was reading on compacttractorreview.com and found that a couple people have had some problems with their front axles, what they were doing with their tractors to cause such problems is a mystery to me?

I've owned both a 4110 and a 4115 and did not have any big problems with either one. The only thing I can remeber was one of the hydraulic valves on the 4110 loader went bad. Did not cost that much to replace and I was able to do the change myself. Right now I am "tractorless" and I would take either one back in a heart beat!

I just checked that site, I had never been there before. But I did read the review about the axle, he also cautioned about rear ballast...and I bet that is what caused his axle failure-lack of rear ballast or using the MFWD (4wd) constantly on hard/paved surfaces. Even his dealer had never seen the problem before...

Absolutely no problems with my 4010. It's just a lower hp version of the ones you listed. Almost 300 hours.

Moved my ROPS lights inside. Have lost the front PTO cover twice and found and replaced it both times. Lost bottom lift arm collar and pin on one side, just as I've had pins come out of a lift arm occasionally.

Some folks have reported broken U-joints between engine and HST on the 4010.

My 4115 runs great, no problems. had a line for the power steering leak but the dealer handled it.

I have an 04 - JD4110, which I like. It is a great tractor for my 5 acres. It could easily handle more acreage. Right now it has a small oil leak in the right rear final drive assembly. Right at the bottom, where the 2 halfs join. John Deere only used RV silicone gel for the sealant. This has been the only problem to date. If John Deere ever comes out with a same size tractor with a 3 speed transaxle, then I might start wanting a new tractor again. One of the things I like about the 4110 is the short turning radius. It has position control 3ph. & electric over hydraulic pto clutch. I now have 230 hrs on it. I have never regretted buying it.

I had this leak also, but it was fixed under warranty. The "new" sealant they used to fix it was white.

I still have intentions of getting some pics of my front dipper on this site. Right now it is stuck back in the corner of the barn for winter storage.

Bought a 4100 HST new in July 1998 with 800 hours split between loader work and mowing and have had no issues to report. And absolutely zero leaks. About the only repairs I've had were cleaning up the mess the JD battery left behind and replaced it with an Optima.
