Hi folks, I have visited this site for years but this is the first time I need direct help that I can not find in the archives.

My dad has a JD 4100 that just quit on him the other day. After some investigation we thought that the fuel shut-off solenoid was bad as it was not pulling in. After a trip to Deere and $150:eek: later the new solenoid is doing the same thing.

When I check things, the white wire going to the solenoid, without the solenoid attached, reads 12 volts then falls off to about 4 volts and you can hear the relay click in and then out. The black wire reads 4 volts and the red 11.6 volts. With the solenoid attached the white wire will read 8 volts continous and the relay never drops out, black is 4 and red 11.6 volts.

My question is this seems to be the problem caused by the thermister being bad on the bigger tractors, 4200-4600, but this one does not seem to have one, is this correct??

Could this be a bad relay, I really would like to find a way to test this without swapping parts. Any Ideas?

Oh and now when I turn the headlights on they do not come on and the dash lights blink with the caution lights.

I hate electrical problems, what happened to the good old days when you shut off the tractor with a lever on the dash. Thanks for the help!!

The fuel shut off solenoid can be checked with an multimeter set to check ohms. Solenoid disconnected, terminals C to D should be .5 ohms, C to E should be 23.5 ohms, and D to E should be 23.5 ohms. But it sounds to me like you have a ground problem and I would start by checking all of your grounds.

I would check your grounds. Start with ground cable off battery; clean terminal post AND remove and clean cable where it attaches to frame. Then check all other grounding points.

Thanks guys, I will start tracing my grounds this afternoon.

Would anyone have a wiring diagram for this tractor?

Its Fixed:D :D

After much tracing, I found that the dealer that had installed the loader when the tractor was new bolted the loader bracket over the main ground, pinching one of the two ground wires. This had, over time, finally cut the wire in two. Fixed the wire, problem solved.

Now I have to stand in front of the sign at my local dealer that says "No return on electrical parts" and convince him to take back the $150 solenoid that I didn't need;)

Thanks again, you guys were right about the grounding.

Sweet success! That is cool that you found it. Was it the same dealer that installed the Loader that sold you the solenoid? Bring a picture of the wire installation maybe.
