JD 4110 Gear
Hello,
I'm new here -
I got a used low-hour JD 4110 Gear drive w/ 410 FEL (divorce sale from neighbor)...
I purchased a brand new 47" Snowthrower for it - but have broken the shear pin/bolt on the impeller 4 times already. This was my first real run with it and we had about 12" of snow. I am not generally breaking it under heavy throwing load, but it almost seems like I am breaking it most often when I release the clutch.
The thrower runs quiet and smooth, and with the driveshaft disconnected - it definitely does not feel like there is any binding going on. I'm going to re-check the chain adjustment to be sure, but is this a technique problem or is running a thrower with a gear-drive tractor just a "bad idea" ?

Thanks !

When engaging the blower release the clutch slowly. The sudden shock of a quick release can shear a pin if RPM's are up. I think your clutch is a two stage type meaning if you push the clutch halfway the tractor will stop but the blower keeps running. Another thing that breaks them is backing into a pile of snow too fast. Try a lower range if possible. Most of the driveways I do are gravel and I break several pins every winter, but mine are broken by a stone, stick, or chunk of ice that stops the augur dead.

Welcome to TBN. Might fill out your profile so we know where you are located, and a little about you. Comes in handy sometimes if we have that info ahead of time.

Thanks for the info !
I read through the referenced thread and there is some great information in there you don't find in the manuals. I had no idea that my clutch is a "two-stage" - that will help a lot if is. I am also going to try using the foot-pedal throttle to ramp up the speed slowly rather than keep it locked up at high RPM.
Trying to learn how to drive this thing and run the Snowthrower at the same time without damaging property or the machine is a bit of a challenge. I have a very steep driveway and some difficult obstacles. A hydro would be much easier, but I couldn't walk away from the deal I was offered on this machine !
