JD 4110, HST, about six years old, 103 hours, original owner.

I had been using the front end loader with pallet forks for about three hours to gather and stack a bunch of tree limbs that had been trimmed off. Nothing very heavy, but a lot of forward and backward motion. Everything had been working fine. Tractor had been running the entire time. Probably shifted into neutral about ten times during the three hours to get off the tractor to pick something up, and always shifted back into low gear fine.

At one point, I needed to shift to neutral to get off the tractor. Shift lever pretty much "freewheeled". There's enough resistance to keep it in place if you let go, but it's not changing from low to neutral or high. No feeling of it shifting into or out of gear. I don't see anything that looks like broken linkage. Everything looks like it is on the "inside".

Can't start it now because it is "stuck" in low gear.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ira

No ideas, but I hope it never happens to mine! Here is a picture from JDParts:

Can you see if the roll pins (#16,17) are in place? That'd be the easiest to fix as it looks external. Wish you luck.

From what I read, it can't be started unless in neutral? Glad my 4300 isn't that way.
Maybe there is a neutral switch that can be jumped to allow you to start the tractor, at least.

Thanks for the diagram, but it sure is hard to understand. Is it showing that parts with numbers 1 thru 13 (pretty much everything but the shift lever) are inside the transmission case? I didn't see any of those parts when I looked at it.

Thanks,
Ira

I think that is correct Ira.

The pin(s) have backed out. Luckily, they didn't fall out, and I was able to knock it back in far enough to get it to shift. I got it started and moved it back to my shop.

What's the trick for pushing those pins back in? Is there a special tool or something? I took the back tire off to get more room, but there's only a couple of inches of room in there and not near enough to get a small hammer on it. Probably should have tried a C-clamp to squeeze it in (if it would fit), but didn't think of that until just now.

Thanks,
Ira

The can try channel locks to press the roll pins back in place if you have the room.
