The shifter for low, medium, high range will turn when shiifting. It will still change ranges if I hold it from turning but something is letting it turn. No grinding noise and pulls normal. Any ideas?

Interesting..... So the shifter shaft and knob are turning? I am curious to hear the outcome on this one.

Any ideas on what could cause the shifter handle to turn freely?

The entire shifter shaft is turning at the case. No nut to tighten up that I see. I am going to try an take it apart tomorrow. Trying to get some ideas on what to look for.
Thanks,

Well it only took a year but I finally pulled the shifter out of the tractor. The shifter shaft that is visible where it goes into housing that bolts to side of case was broken at the factory weld just above the ball that pivots in the housing. Took about 90 minutes to pull it, clean it, weld it back in place, and install. Very simple repair.
