Unfortunately I am in the middle of a repair due to a cracked cyl head. I got my new parts and started to install the valve cover gasket and it seems to be to long. Since this is a one piece rubber gasket, you have to seat it into a grove with hammer because of the tight fit. I got down to the last couple of inches to tap in but I have way to much gasket left for the amount of groove in the valve cover

Anyone tackle this job yet. Seems way to easy to have such a problem.

You obviously need to pull what’s been put in the groove. Then I’d tap it in in 4-6 spots around the cover without pulling or stretching it as you go. That may help evenly distribute the seal. Another option is to pull the gasket and throw it in your freezer for a few hours. That will shrink it and may form it up.

Thanks. I will try to start it in a few different spots

I think you may have stretched it while installing it. I have done a similar thing in the past, but nothing that big.

You mite even want to push it back toward the part already installed to take up slack.

Is your engine tier 3 or 4? The gaskets are different.

An update Incase someone else runs into this. When they made the seal, it had a lip on the bottom which made it to thick. In order to get it to fit in the groove, I had to stretch it to seat it. I cleaned up the lip which helped but didn稚 solve it. I also had to take a fine burr bit in a pencil grinder and widen the groove in places where the casting was to thick. After doing all this, the seal would seat with enough ease that it didn稚 expand the seal.

The old seal I pulled off was not installed correctly from the factory. You could see where the seal had rolled and flattened when installed.
