Hey everybody:thumbsup: Glad to find the forums! I've owned 10 yrs.(since new) and well taken care of. 1050 hrs. I was cutting a neighbors super high grass last fall on her wicked terrain front yard. While under an extreme load all of a sudden started pushing excessive black smoke out exhaust:(. I finished the yard but really was extra careful. I plowed thru the winter which was very light:D It seems now I'll get a good puff whenever I engage the deck..sucks, I know. Now I may be using it to help my sister put in a lawn too...prolly gonna smoke like a b8tch once I start workin 'er in the dirt! what might have happen? cracked ring or burnt valve? I never worked on diesel, only gas. Thanks ps 3TNE74-ejk

Welcome to the forum!

I have a feeling all you were seeing is unburned fuel from lugging. You probably don't have a real problem given your description of the work you have done since. Just avoid lugging.

Your getting plenty of fuel.....as evidenced by black smoke...id check your air filter, and replace it if theres any chance it got wet or is dirty,Sometimes a clean looking filter is actually pretty restrictive...if your air filter is dirty, and you continue to load the engine heavily for long periods of time, you run the risk of melting a hole in a piston or melting/dropping a valve...a steady trail is haze/light smoke under heavy load is normal, continous black smoke is an overloaded engine or air filter issue...the 3tn 74 is a great engine but not exactly a powerhouse depending on what your doing you may be at its limit....

Wow, you nailed it! I still think she'll blow some excessive exhaust, but I did check the air filter and it's done! Gonna swing by the dealer and get one, Thanks for the tip!
