Hey, Koby.

I was told 51R for my 4110. Of course I don't know the difference, to tell the truth. Can you let us know the difference between the 51 and 51R?

Any reason a walmart battery wouldn't work or would that have the same problem? Anyone know if the x90 series has the same type of acid spewing battery?

Theoretically, the Optima AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery is designed to never spill under any condition or outgas under normal use. All other batteries have the possibility of some kind of spewage or corrosive outgassing.

Optimas are also known for being very vibration-resistant. Vibration/shock can kill a 'normal' battery pretty quickly. Optima's are (or were, been a while since I was more involved with that culture) a battery of choice for serious 4wd off-roaders for that reason and the non-spillage. Seems appropriate for a tractor as well.

Add in the fact that my red top will spin my Jeep starter at zero degrees F like it was 70 and they are IMO a no-brainer. I've heard of some issues with QC on some red tops but haven't run into any personally.

Yea, they are just reversed. The stock JD battery in my 4110 has 51 stamped on it. Looking at the battery with the terminals opposite me, the positive is on the right. This can be confirmed here 51 schematic You may have a 51R in your 4110; are your terminals closest to the oil cooler, or up front by the grill? Mine are toward the rear.

Thanks, Koby. A trip to the barn confirms group 51. Just ordered mine from Remy--Just under $110 including shipping. I hate to replace a perfectly good battery but I know what will come soon. The proverbial "ounce of prevention..." I guess.
