42\" plug aerator with a LT 1046 is a no no?

I just purchased a LT 1046 and a 42" plug aerator. I plan on pulling the aerator with the tractor. When reading the owners manual I noticed a paragraph that states "CC series 1000 lawn tractors are not designed for use with any type of ground-engaging attachments (e.g. tiller or mulboard plow.) Use of this type of equipment will void the tractor's warranty."

Has anyone used an aerator with their 1000 series tractor? I do not understand what could happen using this small of an aerator? Does anyone have experience or an opinion on this?

Never used one, but I guess I would not classify a plug aerator as a ground engaging implement.

Could be wrong though,

Unless you have gotten more rain that I have lately.. it would be more like ground scratching equipment.. LOL

Jokes aside.. You shouldn't have a problem.. a core/plug aerator only goes in the ground a couple inches (3 at most) - IF the ground is soft enough to even allow it to penetrate..

We aerated the neighborhood yards with an old craftsman rider, that was maybe 15 hp.. and it did just fine, except if you tried to go up a too steep of an incline..

It would be best to do it right after a rain... I added cinderblocks and bags of gravel to get enough weight so it would penetrate even with the ground soft.

good luck

You are correct about the ground being hard. I plan on doing it in October and after a rain. I can put up to 150lbs on it and that is what I will need to do.

I checked with the people who do the warranty service on my CC and asked them the question. They said as long as what I was pulling weighed less then the tractor I would be fine.

Thanks for your help.

As long as you're on flat ground. Be careful going down hills. The ground/turf will be wet when you're doing this and it won't take something as heavy as the tractor to start pushing you. If you loose traction, it can get a bit hairy. A lawn roller probably is worse (due to the weight being higher) but just something to be aware of.

I've got a 1046 with about 12 hours on it and use it all the time with a pull behind aerator, with no problems. I even load the aerator up with bricks to punch deeper into the soil.
The only warning I would give you is to be careful backing up as the thing will jacknife easily and it will bend the sheetmetal hookup base where you pin the tow behind implement. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Trust me on that one.
