is there a fuel warming unit or air intake heater coil that goes bad on these tractors?

The 4200 does have an air intake heater. Wiring would need to be checked, but first you can check the heater itself. This clip is from the 4200 tech manual.

What is leading you to think it is not working?
Do you hold the key in the heat mode a few seconds before starting, and finding it doesn't start?

Mine wouldn't start in the cold either. Had to hold the stupid key in for fifteen minutes or more before the fuel line would unfreeze (took me a while to figure out that was the problem). Turned out to be two problems actually: 1) really dirty fuel tank and 2) the diesel was gelling up.

For 1) I unscrewed the fuel tank drain and got the last of the gas out. There was plenty of water in it that I could tell was freezing in the fuel filter/separator. And I washed all the black gunk out too with the garden hose. The black gunk was freezing with the water.

For 2) I hear there are additives to mix in. I haven't tackled that yet.

There are anti-gelling agents available. Some guys use a little kerosene. The important thing is to get the anti-gell in there before a freeze. That means both in the tank and throughout the fuel system.
Also, most diesel distributors winterize their fuel around September or Oct (this probably varies through the country though).
I keep my tank filled (less room for condensation then) and never buy more then 4 gallons of fuel at a time. That keeps fairly fresh fuel in the tank.

BTW, arrabil, Tom's in Shrewsbury has anti-gell at that store. I think Wal-Mart sells it too, seasonally.

Mine didn't start once last year...had a little water in it. Changed the fuel filter and filled it with Diesel 911...good as new.

Since I don't mow with my 4200 it can sit for extended periods sometimes. Its part of trash duty now, which is wasn't before, so hopefully I can keeping sitting down to less than a week from here on out. Four gallons would have lasted me more than two months last year. No projects and intermittent need. Still, when you need the darn thing, you really need the darn thing!

I know most people hate WallyMart, but I recycle my oil there so I spend my general automotive money there too. Good to know. Thanks Roy!

To the original poster, I forgot to mention, there is a fuel pump priming lever you can get to if you remove the engine side panel. You can follow the hose from the filter to find it. If you push it a few times you may get better cold starting. Still, its a fix of the symptoms and not a fix of the problem.

There is a drain valve on the fuel tank that can be used to check for water in the fuel. Probably should be checked and water drained at regular intervals.

Bactericide additives may keep the black gunk at bay.
