Hello All. New to the list and have a question for the experts.

I have a 2000 JD 4200. This past weekend while doing some work with a boxblade my 3 point suddenly stopped going to the down postion. If I shut off the engine the box will drop. After I start back up and move level to the up position it will raise but then not go back down. I checked the drop speed dial and I also tried the next day after the unit cooled...same thing. I also noticed the tractor going up a small hill seemed to struggle more then normal.

Any suggestions on what to check? Would I be crazy to suspect a bad filter? The fluid level is also ok.

Thanks in advance.

How many hours on the transmission since new? Since last filter change? screen cleaning?

FEL work okay? Contacted the dealer?

I have 220 hours on the unit. I bought it last year with about 200. I have not yet changed any filters or fluid.

Admit that I don't know, but think maybe the screen may be plugged in the transmission. I have heard (and did mine at 80 hours) that the recommended change of transmission filter and cleaning of the screen is at 50 hours, and not as often after that.

When I changed mine (7 gallons of hyd. oil!), I found the screen had a pretty good mat of steel filings from mfg processes that had been collected. Still plenty of screen left to work with, but I felt good about getting that mat out of there. The screen is easy to remove and clean. Just good to get the gasket new when putting it back to gether. It is near the transmission filter.

I'd try to find out if it has been done, and if not, plan on it.

There is the possibility something else is wrong.

Some talk here on TBN a year or so ago about a filter screen in the hyd. line (under the seat) that may get filled up with debris, and blow through the system, messing things up. I tried hard to determine through my dealer what that was all about, and met a dead end. The mechanics just said it wasn't possible. But threads on here seemed to have other information, that it was and the screen needed checking. No hard info to pass on to you.

There was a FAF (Fix as Find) or a Recall on the Suction Screen for the 4300 JD. I do not have the recall number here with me but check into this as well.

Something else that comes to mind is power beyond option. Does your tractor have power beyond? If so is the hose connected in a loop? If it is disconnected, there might be enough back pressure to keep the hitch from dropping while the engine is running.

I do have the power beyond (2 rear couplers that the lines for the hydro cyclinder for lifting the mower deck) These are controlled by a lever on the right hand fender black cover.

There is nothing currently plugged into either of these couplers. Should I have some type of loop line in them? Is there anything I need to do to bleed pressure that should not be there?

Thanks

jd110...you were right ! I went outside and hooked up the cyclinder to the power beyond couplers. After taking it in and out the 3 point would float down on its own.

I did notice that when I operate the power beyond it makes the 3 point drop or raise slightly...is this normal?

Also for a few minutes the arms were raising back up slowly (10 to 15 sec to go up) But then after playing with the lines more it is all good now.

Thanks for all the input.

BrandonEvans,

What you describe is not power beyond. The power beyond is not controlled by any lever on the tractor. It provides fluid to things that have their own control valves such as a backhoe.

What you describe is the 3rd SCV. It should not need to be hooked up to anything. In hooking lines to it you may have change the flow in the system "loosening" up some debri and allowing the operation of the 3PH. This may be a temporary fix.
