Hey all my shift selector shaft broke off by the transmission I ordered all the parts they said about $300.00 but they could not give me a price on the labor. He said up to $3,000.00. The question is I'm can mechanically incline however some things I won't do in the driveway.how hard is this to replace

I have had direct experience with this recently on a 4400. The root cause is a groove cut into the rod of the range selector to secure an O-ring to seal the trans fluid from leaking out. That's where it broke. The shaft is about 3/8" thick as I recall, but much less at the groove, so it breaks at the groove. VERY straight forward to install a new part, or even repair the old one by welding it together and eliminating the o-ring groove. Hard to believe the rod would be that expensive.
However, the madness comes from getting the seat & seat mechanism out of it. You do NOT have to split the tractor like some manuals or videos suggest. Once the seat is out of the way, then you remove the trans top cover and stuff in the new or repaired rod and reconnect it to the range lever linkage. On another forum, I saw where it was suggested to have a machine shop make a duplicate shaft without the o-ring groove.
When you get it all back together, adjust the lever action so that the handle is the selector stop and NOT the transmission internal gear fingers.
It's actually quite easy, but the seat disassembly and re-installation took a LONG time for us. (Like 3 hours). Look for a YouTube video by a guy who is VERY meticulous about pulling it apart in the right order and staying on point. Keep track of where all the different bolt LENGTHS go. All the same gauge, but different lengths. We did NOT need to get a new gasket, the old one separated without a problem.
