I have the opportunity to purchase a 4200 4wd SST, 420 loader and 4 foot Howse rotary cutter. The tractor has only 424 hours on it and the asking price for the entire package is $12,000. I know the owner and know the history of the machine. It was used mainly as an overgrown lawn mower and has been very well taken care of.

Is this close to a fair price? Are there any problem areas I should be aware of with this setup? Any advice or information that anyone can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forum.
Not sure where you are from (need your bio filled out) but that price is probably in the ballpark but in my area I'd think it to be on the high side(especially without HydroStaticTranny). That price would be good for a 4300 or a 4400, and the 430 FEL in my opinion around here. Prices vary in different parts of the country.

You need to make the decision as what you are willing to pay for that outfit. Compare it to what it would cost you to get the similar size new (i.e. maybe the 3120 which is a bit more HP but the same size frame). Its all relative to what the market will bear. I hear that the demand for the Deere is high and I suspect there is a good reason for that. This tractor is barely broken in and should give you a lot of good service. For me, my 4300 is a bit shy on the HP (never enough of those!) and I plan to trade up. I've been told my 4300 is in demand (I have about the same hours on mine).

I think that's a very good deal. Especially if the machine is in great shape like you say it is. Those are low hours. I'd buy it. I know easily buy that machine and turn around and sell it for a little more. The only thing that would be kind of a minor setback for me is that it isn't a Hhdro Model. And also that machine can easily handle a 5ft Rotary Cutter, along with a 64" Blizzard Rear Snowblower. The reason I wouldn't love the 4ft too much is because it doesnt cover the width of the machine.

I had a JD4200HST, for over 6years, until I sold it about 3 months ago. I never had any issues with the tractor. It handled everything I needed it for. I did a lot of snow removal with the machine, and I used a 5ft Woods Rotary Cutter. Handled everything very nicely.

My opinion, buy it... I would for two reasons, I could easily sell it for more and make a little money, and it is a great machine for your personal use.

You searched for: JOHN DEERE listings where the model contains 4200

Auction Results Prices Equipment for Sale Prices
Total number of listings found: sold at auction = 9; retail asking price = 16
The two numbers below represent auction and retail
Highest price found: $13,000 $16,500
Lowest price found: $4,500 $2,350
Average price: $9,117 $12,476
Average price w/out High & Low: $9,221 $12,912

Don't know if this helps but this web site gives a pretty good idea of what people are paying at auction and what some retail asking prices are. The website is http://www.tractorhouse.com
It also gives a few specs about the tractor and location

Thanks for the link StevenPaul. I have done some searching on the web but had not come across that site yet.

I have some of the same thoughts as you, beenthere. My wife and I had been looking at either the 3120 or the 3320 if we purchase new. I would love to have hydro and all the nicer fit and finish of the new machines. However, we are getting ready to build a house on 35 acres and are hesitant to pay 22,000 for a brand new tractor. It is all wooded and we have cleared about 3 acres for the building site. The tractor will be used for some brush cutting but mostly for driveway maintenance.

Once we found out that this tractor was being sold, we thought that it might be a good compromise. We can buy the tractor outright, without getting a loan right before we apply for the home construction loan. And if we're lucky, after a few years, we hope to follow JasonMac's plan and trade it up for a nicer, newer tractor. We have a John Deere dealer about 10 miles away.

Sorry for the long post, but I really appreciate the feedback.

I just bought a 4200 HST last week, w/420 loader and 72 mower and 370 hours. It's in excellent shape. I paid a little over 12k for it.

In The Northeast ,That Price Is Actually A Good Deal.Other Parts Of The Country It Would Probably Be Considered Little On The High Side.

Yeah, prices from compacts as well as antique tractors seem to be higher in the mid atalantic states for some reason. I forgot to add that for the price of my tractor the dealer serviced and delivered it.
